While we are on the topic of enforcers, I would like to take this time to say Marty McSorley was and always will be a waste of a jersey.

To say that the increase in concussions is due to "a larger focus on safety" is patently false. Concussions and dirty play are at an all-time high regardless of whether or not players were diagnosed or healed properly in the past. That fact is undebatable. The focus on safety is a contributing factor, but in my opinion it's a very ***** one. You're correct when you say that Crosby would've played the whole season prior to the lockout because prior to the lockout he would've had an enforcer to ensure that he didn't get hit in a dirty fashion (twice) the way he did. So he would've never had a concussion in the first place. Gretzky was untouchable (not just because Dave Semenko/Marty McSorley would've ripped your head off if you touched him, but also because he was the entire NHL's meal ticket) and he never suffered a major concussion. Also, I made the point that I don't wanna see guys out on the ice who aren't skilled enough to play NHL hockey and who are just out there to fight (like Zach Stortini); Colton Orr fits exactly into that bill.

You flat out need players who can keep the opponents honest so as to protect your star players. If every team had that there wouldn't be an epidemic of concussions and dirty play the way there is today.

My point and argument was not about concepts, but instead facts. I was saying that there is no place for the enforcer in today's NHL, as a statement of fact. I was not trying to argue whether or not they are needed, but instead state that they are being phased out. Also, about McSorely; here is the real reason he is a waste of a jersey:

as ive said, im all devils... but he sure did deserve that hat trick. for a while it was just a feeling out process. your team should fair well for the playoffs.

He was a man possessed all night long, and that's not something you see from him often (except in the playoffs for some reason). He's always working hard and being responsible on the ice, but he usually isn't the player that you can't help but notice every shift. He's been slumping pretty bad lately, so maybe he just psyched himself up to point where he just wasn't going to be denied. It was pretty awesome. Man did Brodeur rob him on that short-handed break-away though.

The best part about those ones is that they wore them for a game against the Bruins, and the B's demolished 'em. I think it was like 5 - 1, and at the end of the game, B's announcer Jack Edwards said "That'll do it, Bruins 5, Inmates 1"...
