I'm debating if I should get shit hammed tonight for the late games. Loooove the late night West Coast games. Looking forward for a healthy offensive bounce back from the Hawks tonight. No way they can shut down Hossa, Kane, Toews, Sharp and company like that for three more games. At the very least I am looking forward to another heavy-hitting game.

A study was released yesterday claiming Canada could play home to twelve NHL teams: another team each in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, and returns to Winnipeg, Quebec and Hamilton. Other cities that could host a team could potentially be Kitchener, London, Saskatoon and Halifax.

I'm an American and totally ok with this. I would love to see NHL teams in Saskatoon, Medicine Hat, etc. That's what is cool about American Football that teams from small towns can win it all. I think I would be more interested in the sport if there were small teams in Canada that could compete.

They ranked each city by grade. Toronto got an A - the highest - and the lowest was Halifax with a C-. Medicine Hat wasn't even given a look... It's a city of what, 60,000? Whether or not it would be cool, a NHL team there is simply an impossibility.

Kinda sucks the Rangers aren't really doin' anything. They have some offensive threats but their sense of urgency isn't there. At least Washington has some loyal ass fans so I don't have a problem with them at all.

They couldn't even keep the Jets in town. That's saying something. Of course, it doesn't help that some games people have to commute in -50 weather, but still. That said, there was serious talk about adding another team to Ontario. That fell through though.

Forgot to say: I am psyched for the Van/Chi game tonight. Just poured a stiff Phillips and Grapefruit. I hope I don't blackout before the game ends. :hybrid:

All I ask is another of the first games, only with more offense.

Prediction for tonight: Chicago wins 4-3. :hybrid:

So it is 4-1 Lightning right now. No doubt the only reason we haven't heard from Mauser is because he is currently ejaculating all over the place.

Not to be an A$$, but I think the NHL needs too downsize before they decide too add even more teams, I just could NOT see 2 teams in Vancouver, Toronto, & Montreal, that would be sacrilegious from a fans perspective, and really do you think the new team would be as loved and accepted as the original home team. :dunno: I don't know the populations of the other cities but just moving a couple of the weak market teams from the US.. Phoenix, Atlanta... etc.. I am not sure if any other teams are trouble in the US... I heard the Islanders maybe... so 3 teams go north and the rest are just projected speculation.

Not only would they possibly have to increase the number of games too the regular season if all those cities had a team, all the existing divisional rivalries would only be renewed a couple of times a year instead of 4,6 & don't some teams play each other 8 times a year? That would mean there would be more teams to fill rosters for, and that would mean diluting the talent even more too provide players for all the new teams as well.. these are only my opinions of what would or could happen if all these cities got an NHL team.. I wouldn't mind seeing the NHL reduce the number of teams or relocate troubled teams to where they will be secure and have plenty of fan support.
:2 cents:

I don't think the study was suggesting expansion; it was just to dispel the beliefs of Bettman that Canada can't support any more teams.

That said, I don't think expansion like this to Canada is a good idea either. This is purely a study on economics; there was absolutely no thought given to fan opinions. Does anyone really think that Montrealers would support another team? Absolutely no fucking way. The Canadiens are not just a hockey team there, they're a damn religion. Toronto would be possible only because the city is so big, but the team would be the Clippers of the NHL. And I can't see Vancouver having two teams when they couldn't even hold onto the Grizzlies and up until a few years ago the Canucks were playing in front of a half-full stadium. And again, this is based on economics and it assumes that the Canadian dollar will be stronger than the American dollar indefinitely. While I hope that is the case, it is always possible the dollar can take another dive; even if it went back down to $.90 US that would put a painful squeeze on smaller market teams; Edmonton and Ottawa already lose money yearly. I can't dare think about what a team in Kitchener would lose.

And, call me biased, but I support the NHL's expansion to the Southern US. I think they may have overdone it a bit with a few teams (two in Florida? Atlanta instead of a city like Seattle or something) but it's simple as this: put more teams in Canada and you might make more money, but you do not grow the game at all. Put some teams in the South and you introduce the game to new fans and new players. The next great Canadian player will arrive even if Winnipeg doesn't have a team; the next great American player won't if he doesn't have a team nearby.

that was what Tampa fans knew they can do in the playoffs. all that without Stamkos registering a single point too.

if he can get going, we'll be insanely dangerous.

*ahem* paging Stamkos...

Chicago just looks flat out overmatched. The Canucks just flat out look like the better team. I have to give Corey Crawford some credit though so far for some really nice play.

Besides Atlanta, Phoenix and maybe Carolina who is going to move? I dont think a big expansion is the ticket either. I would like to see a few more teams in Canada for sure, but I dont want to ruin the league either.

In reality there are not a whole lot of teams that deserve to be moved. The whole "oh, they'd be more successful in Canada..." argument does not apply cause it can be used against pretty much all non-Original Six + Philly teams. Out of every team in the league, only three are in real danger of being relocated in my opinion: Phoenix, Atlanta and Florida. The Hurricanes have been rather popular for a few years now and Nashville is a deep run away from being the next Tampa Bay. Some may say the Islanders are keen to be moved to Canada, but does anyone really think Bettman will let that happen?
