NFL - Spying costs the New England Patriots $750,000 and draft picks

Great thread! I was waiting for someone to start it...I was being lazy. I just touched on this in another thread.
Personally, being a Jets fan, I felt that the draft picks taken from the Patriots should have been awarded to the Jets as compensation for the Pats cheating against them. I know the NFL determined that the cheating had no effect on the outcome of the game, but I'm not sure I can agree with that. If it had no effect, and gave no advantage, then why were the Pats doing it? I'm not saying the Pats wouldn't have won if it were not for the cheating, but I feel the Jets as the victim should be given something. I realize I could be biased. :2 cents:

Your post in that other thread is what gave me the idea for this one.:)

Though not a Patriots "FAN" I have rooted for the Pats unabashedly since 9/11 and since Tom Brady became the greatest stud walking our city streets.

I am embarrassed for Boston. I am shocked. I feel defrauded and like I'm such a sucker. Brady is an assclown, too, for his cad-like behavior, fwiw.

The penalty is not strong enough. This scandal shakes at the foundation of competition itself. I would've banned Bellicheck for the rest of the season. He is a fraud and an arrogant fool.

I am also angry at fraudulent ex-NFL players working at ESPN...namely Sean Salibury. He is a clueless, stupid as shit, "analyst" who offers nothing an obvious fan couldn't comment on. It was sickening to hear his "passionate" "full-throated" defenses that "this scandal is really nothing.." "the players still have to execute."

Seriously, who is Salisbury blowing at ESPN to keep his job? Can't someone on that network call him a disgrace, publically?

As a huge Pats fan I'm not really bothered by the whole situation. Whats done is done. All teams do it in some form. They just got caught.

That would be incredibly unfair to the other 30 teams that had nothing to do with this if the Jets got that kind of advantage over them.

I think the punishment was slightly lenient, but not bad. Suspending Belichick would have been impossible to enforce without having somebody by his side 24/7 during the suspension. On a scale from 1 to 10 for cheating I put this at about a 1 or 2 unless their is more to this we don't know about. Still, trying to cheat even if it's not necessarily effective is almost as bad as the cheating in my opinion. Maybe they could have taken the money they fined them and in addition lowered their salary cap number next year by that amount. That would have hurt more. Or they could have called the game forfeit and simply awarded the Jets the win while doing what they did now for a punishment and putting the people involved on lifetime probation with much more serious consequences if ever caught in shady actions again.

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
I can't wait to see what kind of signs the fans take to the games during the Patriots road games.

Don't film me, I'm just trying to flag down the beer man!

who gets the draft pick...?
i've been trying to figure it out the whole time

No one get the pick it's forfeited. The first round will only have 31 picks. The really dumb thing is that the pick that they lose is their original 1st round pick. They still will have a pick in the 1st round that they picked up in the Randy Moss trade. They should lose whichever of the picks is higher in the 1st round.

As far as stealing signs goes, that happens all the time. It's the videotaping of the signs that is the problem.

um who cares? in baseball we would try and steal every single sign there is. are MLB teams penalized for doing so? no!

BUT- you're not likely videotaping them as the Pats were doing here, probably to analyze them with game film later on so that, in the end, they'd know what signals brought about what formations, and so on.

Billy boy admitted total responsibility, so I'm not sure how they can not punish him in some way. The guy is the leader of the team, he admitted to doing something that is cheating.

I think the NFL could have sent a stronger message.

the 54 giants used binoculars or something in centerfield to steal the catchers signs. they werent penalized. i think this is a case of goodell doing what he thinks he should do. he has come down hard on everyone else so far. so why not now? teams steal signs all the time. the other teams know this as well. ill bet you that even before this "scandal" hit, the jets were using some different signs whenever they play the patriots. this is nothing. taking a draft pick away is too harsh.

oh, and nfl films already tapes teams signs. ever see it when they show the sidelines?

Actually there have been many teams that have gotten penalized in the past because they were caught with people out in the stands with binoculars giving signals of the signs to the players or they had somebody in the clubhouse giving signals to the team in the dugout. I think one incident happened long enough ago they had to communicate the signals by a blinking light hooked to a simple wire. Players out in the field can steal signals all they want because it's the other teams job to disguise them when they are in a position to do so. It's another thing when a team is using some outside person out of the playing field doing it in secret.

Anything that takes away from deciding things on the field BLOWS. That's the bottomline. Roids/HGH/VideoCheating...all of this shit is shit.

It takes away from the spirit of competition within defined parameters of the respective league.

Iamforever--is it written in MLB Rules that teams are prohibited from "stealing signs?" The Pats' behavior was against the rules of the NFL AND they were warned about it on Sept 6 of this year.

whether im right or wrong, was taking draft picks away from new england the proper punishment? look at what they want to take. a first rounder or a second and a third rounder? the punishment doesnt fit the crime. (i dont see it as a crime though)

The punishment doesn't punish the Pats or Belichick for their behavior THIS SEASON! First Round draft picks for the Pats are expendable. They routinely pick at the end of the first round anyway. They picked Brady up with a 6th Rd pick.

Belichick should've been suspended minimum of 5 games immediately.

so the first rd of the nfl draft will have 31 picks... that's the stupidest shit i've heard in a while. This whole punishment is stupid.

This means that some college kid who worked hard enough to be considered for the draft won't get in because the NFL is punishing the Patriots for stealing signs.

It DOES seem kind of silly, doesn't it. Why no suspension for the coach that ADMITTED IT?

:1orglaugh omfg. a suspension is just too much.

belicheck doesn't need suspended... but if you must do something about him, a fine may not be a big deal to him but neither is this whole incident. The draft pick/picks is too much and too complex an idea.

I would like for you to give me some insight on why Belicheck gets a 5 game suspension in your mind
