NFL '10/'11 Season Thread.

I'm wondering if they would had given an amend to James Harrison if he'd have played in the 70's.I'm sure Jack Tatum is laughing right now where he is.It's for the player safety, but in this sport, you can't prevent all those "significant plays" with that kind of speed in a game. You can score in 5 seconds.I always have in mind the hit of Steve Atwater against this big fullback, he must have an amend too, for this one.Still, it's for the players safeties those quick penalties made by Anderson.

*Shivers at the mention of Jack Tatum* Man if you were a receiver when that guy was around on the field, there was always the possibility of you either crapping your pants, getting completely separated from your senses, or in the unfortunate case of Daryl Stingley, never walking again.

^^ I don't legitimate or make a parallel of the vicious hits of Tatum's and now, but it's a collision sport as far i know it, this is why i took for me the worst example, in my opinion. i am for safe players in every sports, but don't get me wrong, defenses won games & sometimes hard hits win games or at least change their momentum. Finally, unlike Tatum most defensive rough players right now, doesn't want to injure other players.

If you want to stop that, you're suspend it literally.

I'm sorry, but I DID NOT see anything egregious in the Robinson hit on Jackson. It was a big hit. So what. It's part of the game. The Scott Stevens hit on Lindros is the most ruthless hit in the history of sports and there was no infraction against Stevens. Like someone else said, the NFL should keep the pink gloves. They are turning into girly men. :1orglaugh

James Harrison is an idiot. I hope he retires over getting fined. Walk away from $22mil over $75k. Nice decision there, pal.

I'm tired of all these chest-thumping ESPN ex-player analysts all acting like the game has been ruined forever over a crackdown on head hunting. I'm particularly tired of the ones that claim, "BUT I WAS TAUGHT TO PLAY THAT WAY!!! WAAAAAAAHH" Gee, loser, you were taught to be a dirty scumbag than?

The modern NFL athlete has no real relation to the ancient NFL athlete from the 50s/60s... the game has changed bigtime, and, therefore, the rules should be changed to accommodate bigger, faster players...:dunno:

I dont have a problem with the new rule/suspensions, but I do worry about how heavily it is enforced...refs have enough trouble determining touchdowns and other penalties WITH HD replays...And in cases where the helmet to helmet is simply caused by the chaos of 22 men running around trying to knock eachothers asses off, its going to be tough to keep tabs on em all...

Running backs and ballcarriers lead with their helmets when going into the piles...defensive players should not be held responsible for that...but at the same time how do you punish the offensive player for doing something they've been doing since the little leauges...it will be interesting to see how it is handled.

as far as this "clutch" stuff...I think we are lookin at the wrong sport...Baseball is probably the mother of all statistics and probability junk...the answer wont be found in a scientific study, it will be found in examining numbers...so lets look there...

here's something a bit interesting

http://www.insidethebook.com/ee/index.php/site/comments/clutch_skill_does_exist/
...

"Anyway, as for actually finding a clutch skill, Andy did in fact find it, and the results are published in The Book. On p.103:

Batters perform slightly differently when under pressure. About one in six players increases his inherent “OBP skill” by eight points or more in high-pressure situations; a comparable number of players decreases it by eight points or more.

But as Andy concludes later on p.108:

For all practical purposes, a player can be expected to hit equally well in the clutch as he would be expected to do in an ordinary situation.

And the reason is as Andy noted on the previous page:

...that normalizing factor of 7600 clutch plate appearances is simply too large to ever predict a specific player to have a significant clutch hitting skill. Put differently, the fact that one of three players performs at least .006 [wOBA] better or worse in the clutch doesn’t mean that we can tell which players have this skill, even when looking at several seasons’ worth of data.

So, the entire problem rests on the fact that the hitting talent in MLB is so narrow to begin with, and that even though we have determined that clutch skill exists in that population of players, it is simply too hard to identify the specific players that it makes any practical difference.

To conclude: yes, clutch skill exists. No, it’s not that big a deal (at best, half as wide as than the platoon advantage). Correct, teams should not rely on clutch skill in their decision-making process, other than as a tie-breaker."

That has a problem with it. 8 points of OBP and .006[wOBA] is so insignificantly small (and then only comes from a small portion of players) that nothing meaningful thing can come from it that conclusion. Saying clutch skill exist from that is a flawed conclusion. It would be like me having a bunch of people flip a coin 7600 times and then saying a portion of them are clutch head flippers when they get heads as a result 3806 times instead of 3800 times. Which means it's probably normal random variance, and not from skill. Whenever you take a large group of players no matter where their skills lie some of them will come out a little ahead or below just based on that random variance. It's probably the reason about an equal number of players are slightly both very slightly below and above their normal numbers.

As far as football concussions go the problem I have is that even when players are actively trying to avoid helmet to helmet hits when both people are running at full speed while the ball carrier is bobbing, weaving, and ducking sometimes it's almost impossible to avoid it unless the tackler can either be given superhuman reflexes or be made psychic. Often player have to react in a spit second. A lot of the hits I have seen aren't even helmet to helmet. I've seen people called for a penalty where they drive their shoulder into a receiver catching the ball at chest level and the force of the impact caused the receiver's head to jerk forward and smash their helmet into the tackler. What do you do when the runner puts his head down and drives forward. If you eliminate that you might as well kiss goal line plunges into the endzone goodbye. Nobody runs vertical with the ball or tackling in the game. It's not natural and it doesn't work. It also looks stupid. There is also a reason players try for the big hit. It's not to injure the other player as much as that's often what will cause a turnover and wear them down over time.

Pretty soon they are going to have it where once the receiver is up and in the air he can't be touched at all. You'll just have to let him catch it. It's pretty stupid considering that defensive backs pretty much play with one arm tied behind their back in today’s football so they want to make it even tougher. Soon it's just going to turn the game into a mockery (or I should say even more into) of the great game it once was. I don't have a problem with penalizing, fining, or even suspending somebody where a helmet to helmet his was blatant and intentional or the person was being so reckless he caused it when it was very reasonable to avoid it, but big hits are a part of football, and the players know what they are getting into when they get into the game. You can't take all the risk out of life. If they try it won't be football anymore than kicking the can could be considered football now. It would be some crappy different game with the football label attached to it.

bottomline on the new ruling is the headhunters do deserve suspension, but for the countless times (especially where the NFL has gained so much popularity/money for the "big hits") where NOTHING can be done to avoid the helmet to helmet...i see a problem in suspending a guy, taking his paycheck away, and possibly changing the outcome of season.

What a surprise...James Harrison is back. And instead of playing "the victim" as he tried yesterday...now he is the "militant aggressor" with his new response--"I won't let the league stop ME from playing the game I love".... :barf:
Dude. Shut the fuck up Harrison.

What's up with "holier-than-thou" Mrs. Favre going on tv and spouting biblical verses? :dunno: Isn't it safe to say that her faith in marriage has (perhaps) let her down, and therefore it's time for a new faith?

Wasn't it great when people kept their personal religious beliefs ~private~ instead of wearing them on their sleeve, especially when a camera light is on?

Should the NFL direct national broadcasters (i.e. ESPN, ABC, NBC) not to film the giant postgame prayer circles? :yesyes:

He's a douche! But....he's on my fantasy football team. :dunno:

She is an idiot! Everyone knows Favre is a perv...shit, he's a fuckin horny old man!:rubbel:

Exactly, keep your religion and your nasty porn addictions to yourself. No one wants to talk about shit like that!:nono:

James Harrison needs bitches about this and that. Maybe him and Turrell Suggs should get together and cry things while holding each other.

Sanders have some biceps injuries, i don't know if we gonna see him this season. I know this is an emotional sport with all that matters, that's why i love to study it. Sunday night, it's Vikes at Lambeau field against the Packers. Some members probably would flame themselves on their post, though.
I saw Green Bay have big names injuries to deal with (Matthews, Finlay, Grant); however, i'm pretty sure, they want to humiliate Minnesota, after the last year sweep & the last Sunday's upset against the Dolphins.
On the other side, The Vikings are grinding their victories; it would be a good opportunity for "The Hall Of Fame connection" to put some numbers, if Favre hold on the ball enough to make them.Their schedule will be tougher too (New England, Arizona, Chicago). They need a convincing game to be considered as a NFC title pretenders.
This game is more indecisive than ever, in my opinion....Maybe, we gonna have some magics, by Favre or Rodgers, this guy will win something, he is too good.

the Colts big injury is Dallas Clark who is basically irreplaceable. at this point Mr. Sanders should retire he is always hurt and hasn't helped the Colts since 2007.

I really hope Moss has his turn returning to Lambeau as a Viking this Sunday...

All I know is that The Packers are still without a running game, and that the Vikings still have no defense...My fears is that Rodgers will scorch us, and are struggling "high powered" offense will not score enough...

The Vikings have a pretty decent defense. It's not like they are the Jacksonville Jaguars. They aren't the Ravens or Steelers or Jets, but they are still a far cry from crappy.
