I've only gotten to see one K-1 event. They are way too expensive, but I've seen a lot of kickboxing sanctioned by other sanctioning bodies. The girl I used to train with is pretty famous in the kickboxing world now I guess, in fact, Steve Mazagati is one of her friends on her myspace page. She lives in Australia now, and is married to an Australian kickboxing legend. I used to go watch her fight all the time. When I started kickboxing, I was just doing it for fun, and to get into shape. Toward the end, I was starting to kick around the idea of getting in the ring myself, and my instructor was starting to drop hints that I should, but it's a big decision to make, espescially when you're a heavy weight. Right around the time I was conscidering it though, I was hit with health problems, and it never came to be, so I'll be left wondering "what if?" for the rest of my life.
I still thoroughly enjoy watching kickboxing, but I enjoy MMA more even though I'm a pretty new fan to it. It just seems that a lot of technique is lost when stand up and ground is combined. My friend, who is a grappler, Judo/Jiu-Jitsu says that it's the same with their ground games. I take his word for it because I've only done a very limited amount of that stuff. I wrestled for three years in high school, but it's not the same thing. When I was taking my combat grappling class, I actually sparred with Joe Stevenson. My friend just pointed out to me who he was. I didn't even realize I knew him. He tapped me out in about 15 seconds because my instinct, as a wrestler, as to stay off my back, so as soon as I went to my base, he was choking me out.
I used to enjoy boxing a lot too, but after watching UFC, it's hard to watch because it just seems so slow paced anymore, and they're always stopping the fight because the fighters are grabbing eachother.
