as to the various musings...
JBS, I understand why you would think everyone is rotten... & I cannot argue we all have the capacity for negligence & cruelty if not evil, i would say that the shining moments... the selfless acts that are performed without hesitation or conscious thought and that are too often ignored are tacit proof that we are not totally or even mostly rotten. complacent, selfish, self absorbed to be sure. but not rotten.
i'd argue that rotten means going out of your way to hurt people, and most people i know & like (& i like most people) might be okay with the reality that sometimes our actions hurt others, but they don't seek it out... they don't choose to hurt someone else when there are alternatives.
I'll get off of the soapbox before I fall off (or am knocked off).
