It does seem like a no brainer, and that's not just because we are a bunch of pervs.

Re: Should Prostitution be Legalized in the US?

I say yes,
BUT, all whom pay or get paid for sex must have a monthly good health certificate.
If you want to pay or get paid you got to be clean!!!

It's called regulation of the Business doing the Business.

Re: Should Prostitution be Legalized in the US?

I think organized prostitution should be legalized...ie. brothels. An actual business-like establishment where girls can work under an employer who takes taxes off, so that they're doing things the fair way. And to have the brothels inspected regularily to make sure they're up to laid out guidelines, for cleanliness and to make sure none of the ladies are being used or abused by the owners.

But street prostitution should remain illegal simply for the fact that its unsafe. Too many girls run by pimps that don't give them a big enough cut, if any, of their money and alot of girls are abused and doing it for drugs. I just like the idea of it being organized in a strip-club-ish kinda way lol.

Re: Should Prostitution be Legalized in the US?

Now they probably aren't going to audit you because you pay billy five bucks a week to mow your lawn.

that is called fraud, or tax evasion.

I would hope no one would be audited for paying someone five dollars.
But, you never know with the American Gestapo, known as the IRS.
The Federal Reserve's goons.

So, lying to the American people is worse than "fraud" when are voluntary?
It says it right in the tax code. It's illegal and most intelligent people know that.

I understand your politics, but get real. the fact is that we do have to pay taxes and that isn't going away anytime soon. I think that prostitution should be legal and should be treated just like any other job.

People only pay taxes out of fear. We shouldn't fear our government.
But, not enough people will stand up. The American sheeple would rather be fleeced.

Re: Should Prostitution be Legalized in the US?

I say yes it should. It's been called the oldest profession and it's not going to go away any time soon. There should be regulations on it though. If I'm not mistaking, in Toronto, they have HIV tests and I believe drug tests for the women. Is that such a problem here in the states? Some of the money could and should be used to balance the budget or do something constructive for the country.

Here I go again with another Carlinism: why do people who drop napalm on people get a medal, while hookers who give orgasms to guys go to jail?

Something's not right there. Prostitution should be legalized immediately. It's here to stay so people should just accept the fact and leave it alone.

Re: Should Prostitution be Legalized in the US?

Legalizing prostitution isn't going to improve the safety of the prostitutes by any means. In fact, it would probably make it more violent and unsafe.

Once prostitution would be legalized, think of how many businesses would come out of the woodwork. All of these businesses would then be in direct competition with one another. Just because prostitution would then be legalized, it wouldn't change the fact that the whole "industry" would be completely cut-throat and dangerous.

If it was legal, than there would be even MORE money to be made, so these business owners (pimps) and employees (prostitutes) would fight even harder with one another to make that money.

Plus, most of the prostitutes who are currently walking the streets would be fucked (not literally). If prostitution was legalized, businesses would open up and they would hire only the most attractive looking women (and men) in order to be able to charge the most money for their services. Then, what happens to the trashy, beat up street walkers who can't compete with Little Miss Perfect? Seriously, who is going to pay $100 to get a blowjob from some ugly, middle aged piece of trash with scabby skin and a torn up pussy, when they can pay $100 to get a blowjob from a "perfect looking" 19 year old blonde who has the body of a Goddess? :dunno:

The "original" street walkers would be thrown out onto the curb and probably be forced into immediate homelessness. Not to say that prostitutes aren't homeless to begin with, but their situation would be made a hundred times worse if prostitution was legalized.

Re: Should Prostitution be Legalized in the US?

YES- even as one of the more conservative members of the board (and hey, I think Howard Dean might be considered conservative around here :D ) I think this is something that ought to be legal. It's a ridiculous, age old morality law that is just as archaic as some of the folks who think it should still be illegal.

Want to make prostitution cleaner? Less dangerous? Make the US govt. a BUNDLE in taxes? Legalize the selling of sex, and finally, make it less shameful for dudes who can't get laid to... well... get laid.

George Carlin once said. "Selling is legal. Fucking is legal. Why is selling fucking illegal?"

Re: Should Prostitution be Legalized in the US?

I'm not into prostitution, but I have always failed to see any significant legitimate reason to keep it illegal. Most of the reasons given for making it illegal are usually just somebody trying to enforce their own morality on things they don't like and that don't really effect them.

Re: Should Prostitution be Legalized in the US?

Prostitution already is legal in the U.S... as in, on a federal level. Its the individual states that have made it illegal. The only federal statute regarding prostitution is the Mann Act, which criminalizes facilitating the transport of a woman across state lines for the purposes of "immoral acts." However, within a state, the federal government has no jurisdiction, and any state could legalize prostitution if they chose to.

Actually, two states do have legal prostitution: Nevada and Rhode Island. Nevada allows for the operation of regulated brothels, and Rhode Island only prohibits street solicitation and brothels (basically, they just allow escorts/call girls). If you live in the U.S. and you want prostitution legalized in your state, just find out how to make it a ballot initiative and get to work.

I agree with you 100%.

That Carlin quote was the one I was trying to think of and you remembered it. Thanks H.

So you are saying I should become a hooker so I don't have to pay taxes? haha. I really don't see how your point has any relevance to this issue.

Re: Should Prostitution be Legalized in the US?

I voted yes, I've always believed that prostitution should be legalized with brothels set up in every state. This way it is taxed and it gets rid of the street prostitution and the pimps.

If that's what you want to do. But, you would be a gigolo.

My point is more relevant than yours. People are being illegally fleeced. Taxes are illegal. They only pay out of fear.
We need another Boston Tea Party. So, we can throw the leech, known as the Federal Reserve out of our country.

Re: Should Prostitution be Legalized in the US?

Yeah, that really worked out well for the the Puerto Rican Independence movement, Black Panther party, the American Indian movement, the MOVE group, Randy Weaver, the Branch Davidian's, all those people in Guantanamo Bay... yeah, I got a pretty good reason to be afraid of the government.

The sex industry isn't always an easy "job" to be successful in. Hell, even to be in the entertainment industry, you gotta be hot, young and vibrant. Its a cutthroat world man!

Re: Should Prostitution be Legalized in the US?

The problem that I have with the govts regulation of yet another part of our lives is that they haven't been able to demonstrate a sense of honesty with respect to the accounting and / or proper allocation of incurred tax receivables.
Besides, I'm sick and tired of the overabundance of governmental authority already !
They beat us down 'till there are no options, once you subscribe, you're hooked.
Show me a nice long streak of fiscal accountability and I might reconsider my ''decriminalization'' position but I doubt it.

I think it should be legalized, or at least de-criminalized. San Francisco's plan sounds good.
