Killed by US gunships

Leaked video footage shows Iraq journalists killed by US gunship.

The video is graphic, and disturbing. As a group of men cluster in a Baghdad street two US Army helicopters open fire, repeatedly shooting the men and gunning one down as he tries to flee.

As the dust clears, the troops survey their handiwork.

"Look at those dead b******s," one pilot says. "Nice," another responds.

The incident on July 12, 2007 killed 12 people, including two journalists who worked for the Reuters news agency — photographer Namir Noor-Eldeen, 22, and his driver and assistant Saeed Chmagh, 40. Two children were also wounded.

The black and white aerial footage shot through the cross-hair sights of a gun includes conversations between the pilots in two Apache helicopters as they open fire on the group in the New Baghdad District of the Iraqi capital.

The Pentagon has refused to confirm whether the video is real, claiming that it is working to authenticate the footage, but a senior US military figure has confirmed off the record that it is genuine.

The Iraqi Journalists’ Union today called for a government investigation into the shooting. Union chief Mouyyad al-Lami said that the footage was evidence of a crime and should be investigated.

Profiles: Iraq journalists killed by US gunships.

“Namir was an editor’s dream... on top of every story,” said Bob Strong, Reuters's former chief photographer in Iraq. “His nose had been broken more than once, he’d been shot in the leg, detained, harassed and threatened, but his quick smile and energy never faded.”

Mr Noor-Eldeen was one of two Reuters employees cut down in a Baghdad street in 2007 by gunfire from a US Apache helicopter. He had been working on a feature, photographing wrestlers in a Baghdad gym, and was killed alongside his friend and driver Saeed Chmagh as they went to investigate street clashes between insurgents and the US military.

Dramatic cockpit footage of their deaths filmed through the crosshairs of a gun, along with voice recordings of the American helicopter pilots, were published today on the Wikileaks website.

"Friendly fire" or killed on purpose?

It's time to leave and fix our country.

I don't know about leaving either war right now! but it's definately high time the US takes a look at how it trains its armed forces.

This video is showing the terrible state your country is in.

And do think what the USA could do at home with the money practically burned in Afghanistan and Iraq!

Every soldier in Afghanistan costs the country a million dollars per year, the total bill for the war going into its 8th year is 250 billion.

And the USA won't be stopping so soon.

So why worry about bailouts or healthcare, you do have the money, you just choose to burn it on a war you won't ever win.

well maybe you shouldn't be running around a warzone while carrying things that from a distance could be perceived as weapons. when you hear an apache in the distance you dont walk around and try to find people to film you get the fuck inside and hope they don't fuck your shit up, also you don't let someone you are shooting at get away especially when they look exactly the same as the enemy, its not hard to put on a vest that says media or news

How about don't just shoot at anything that moves?

Also putting a vest on that says "media" in Iraq? Don't be silly! That would be begging to get you, your family and anyone associated with you chopped up!

The fact that they opened fire on a group with weapons is no suprise to me. The fact that 2 of these weapons are actually camera's is just bad luck. I guess the guys with the AK's were bodyguards or something.

What does shock me is the fact that they are just waiting for the guy to get up and shoot him again. And as the minivan comes to pick up the wounded guy they see this as an act of aggression. This shows some disturbing mental problem at the pilots side: the wounded guy is theirs, and they don't want him to get help... The fact that they cheer on the bloodbath they created is also a sign of strange behavior... these guys need help to stay human in war!

I know war is dirty, and have deep respect for the guys risking their lives for the rest of us, but this is sick!

Also the fact that no legal action was taken on the pilots and tapes kept hidden is disturbing and shows the fact that some in the Army approve these things...

well said, however I don't think the army approves of it, but just believe that they can't afford for it to become public.

It's unfortunate.

I know the US isnt a bad place, and US people are good people. But such incidents slay the USA in the PR game, especially with non traditionally allied peoples.

keep human in war? wtf? there is no humanity in war. they percieved those men as targets, they took them out. i didnt notice any "cheering" some "can i take these guys out now?" "nice shot!" maybe, but nothing compared to other shit ive heard in videos and from guys who were actually there that i know. sometimes the best way to cope with what your doing in something like that is to cheer on your co pilot and whatnot, or something of that sort.

20/20 hindsight, they fucked up, but when your in the moment, you do what you need to do, or what you think you should be doing. war sucks, we all know that. shit happens

First the report this morning that U.S Special Forces killed three women on Feb. 12 during a raid in Afghanistan–two of the women were pregnant mothers with sixteen children between them–and then dug the bullets out of their bodies so they could cover up what they had done... Then this horrific video of trigger happy U.S. soldiers in Iraq acting like they are playing a video game as they shoot down unarmed photographers from above. The comments they make are chilling. And no one in the Administration will answer Helen Thomas's question about "why they hate us." It's not for our freedoms, that's for sure.

I didn't read the article. Frankly, I have no taste for journalism written in a narrative form.

I'm not joking.

I have absolutely ZERO problem with this. In case some of you have forgotten, this is a war zone, and the pilots were engaging a group of people carrying AK-47's. They were doing their job.

The reporters who got caught in the crossfire should have known better than to hang around a group like that when there are gunships hovering in the area. What did they think was going to happen?

How can you say that there should be no ethical imperative in warfare? Warfare is a strategic attack against a target for achieving a goal- it's not just the indiscriminate killing of anyone that happens to be in the area or might be a threat. And it's not the justification for any action taken, which is why we have very explicit rules of conduct for combat engagements.

The distinction between this and what would be called a police action or otherwise a security situation is constantly being blurred and is the reason for most of the criticism of the US military.

They hate us because they are practitioners of a religion that despises anyone who isn't one of theirs. If someone in the administration had the stones to tell the truth, they would be able to answer the question, but that would be politically incorrect. Remember, Christians are fair game ANYTIME, but don't you dare say anything about the muslims.

As I recall, we weren't shooting anyone before those losers hijacked some airplanes and flew them into our buildings - killing THOUSANDS of innocent people.

They hated us before we were even over there.

DID YOU WATCH THE VIDEO??
I have twice. It's very clear on it that about a dozen men had NO weapons. They were walking with their hands at their sides and no weapon slung on their shoulders. Only one person held anything large, it was a boxy elongated shape we now know was a camera. Yes maybe it was a Bazooka or RPG, but you don't fire into a group of people who are not acting hostile, without knowing for sure. To do so is to act criminally negligent possibly to the point of a war crime.

Most of them (hijackers) came from Egypt & Saudi Arabia. We didn't go to war against Egypt & Saudi Arabia now did we? We went to war with Iraq & Afghanistan, based in part on lies, hidden agenda's and incompetent intelligence. We've been there so long now that a lot who are fighting us hate us for just being there (an invading army) and don't give a dam about religion.

Yes I did watch it. The wording before the video even started says itself that "some of the people appeared to be armed". This is a piece of propoganda, and even they had to admit that a number of them appeared to be armed.

Furthermore, you say that "you don't fire into a group of people who are not acting hostile, without knowing for sure." Are you aware of what the status of the situation was that day? The pilots called in and asked for permission to engage the enemy. They were given permission. This is far from negligence, and it is nowhere near a war crime.

Most of them came from Egypt and Saudi Arabia, but 100% of them were muslims, and 100% of them were doing it because they were attempting to become martyrs in what they perceived to be a "holy" jihad.

You can try to blur the issue, but it's very obvious why they did what they did. They wanted to attack the "unholy infidel, the great satan known as America".

I don't care what country they came from. They were ALL a bunch of extremist muslim pieces of garbage. In my opinion, anyone who doesn't think they care about religion, is very naive.
