He was saying that it was a very narrow path to heaven. He also required that you had to accept him as the son of God and acknowledge the that we are sinners and that we must repent.
He was also saying that a rich man would have a more difficult path because their focus is on worldly things and not spiritual things.
That "hippie" had a lot of compassion for the poor but he still had rules that they had to follow and that you wouldn't like.
