>>> Help us come up with charities for the 2012 FreeOnes Charity Drive

For the 2012 holiday season, FreeOnes will be giving away $1,000 to charity. However, there are so many deserving charities locally, nationally, and internationally, we're having an incredibly hard time figuring out who to give to.

This is where both you, the fans, and the 2012 Miss FreeOnes winners come in. We're allowing the winners to suggest charities and we're going to let you guys vote on which one is most deserving. On December 24th we'll make the official annoucement on which charity we're giving to.

We are currently looking for 2 more charities to put on the poll in December! Please suggest some charities that you'd like to see the money goes towards! In a week or two we'll look over your suggestions and pick 2!

- Your suggestion must be an actual charity and not an individual person
- Your suggestion DOES NOT have to be a charity in the United States or a big charity. It can be your local animal shelter too.
- Your suggestion does have to be a legit non-profit that has it's own website explaining itself.

Here are the charities the girls have already nominated:

■Polaris Project (Siri): http://www.polarisproject.org/
■S[NOBABE]usan G. Komen[/NOBABE] for the Cure (Siri): http://ww5.komen.org/
■Humane Society International (Vicky Vette): http://www.hsi.org
■Wounded Warriors (Vicky Vette): https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org
■American Red Cross (Briana Lee): http://www.redcross.org/
■Breast Cancer Research Foundation (Briana Lee): http://www.bcrfcure.org
■Mine Kafon (Miss Hybrid): http://minekafon.blogspot.co.uk/
■CBMUK preventing river blindness (Miss Hybrid): http://www.cbmuk.org.uk/gift-shop/river-blindness

I tried to think up some wise-ass yet charming endearment to persuade you to pick this one. Hopefully it's a reflection of how serious I am about it that I'm coming up empty.

Good suggestion.

Just be aware that even if we pick it for the poll and it wins, they may not take our money. ;-\

Well done Petra for organising this. I hope the winning charity will chose to accept the donation. It may be that we have to resort to the Lurking Dirk cigar supply Foundation .

I like, and have donated to Kiva, at www.kiva.com

What I like about this charity is that it's a "teach a man to fish" sort of charity, and the money you donate helps local economies with possible job growth.

How it works is, you sign up, and then choose your donation amount. You then are presented with a list of people who run small businesses around the world. You choose the business you want to help, and your money is loaned to that person (at, I believe, 0% interest). The person uses the money to expand their business, and they pay it back to you in small installments. You then re-loan it to another small business.

The theory is, you are helping these people expand their businesses, and as their business grows, they'll hire people....and then those people have a job....economies grow, etc etc.

Again, I like it because it helps people help themselves and their communities. it's not so much just a donation, it's a hand up.

They're already on the list. We're looking for 2 more charities to add to the list in the original post. ;-)

I think the idea is pretty awesome, but is it actually considered a charity?

It believe it is, but it's on the grey edge of Charity...it's a non-profit organization; donations can also be made to help them with admin costs, and your donations are tax-deductible (in the US). I guess technically you can get your money back if you want, once it's been repaid by a borrower, so there's that to consider.

It's a micro-lender for people in poor areas that can't get capital. The loans are interest-free from Kiva. I consider it Charity because these people would never have access to capital if it weren't for an outfit like Kiva, and if they did, it would be on utterly horrendous terms (like, if you don't pay me back with 100% interest by next month, I'll kill your wife).

It's NOT a typical Charity but it's worth considering. One of the nice things is, you can keep re-lending your money. I first donated 4 years ago and I've been re-paid 5 times already...I just keep lending it out.

I think we can consider it as long as we can donate to the organization itself. Overall it's a pretty great looking organization and one well worth considering! Thanks for the suggestion.

Tony LaRussa's Animal Rescue Foundation. Yeah, the founder's a douchebag, and I think it's tacky to include your name in the title of your charity, but they do a lot for animals in the Bay Area.

Either that, or there's also the GSB Penile Enhancement Surgery Fund... :flaccid: :o
