Guns Guns Guns !!!

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
Nope definitely not new to the game, I have been a responsible gun owner for over 25 years I just don't feel comfortable posting my personal inventory on freeones.
I appreciate your detailed and well thought out response and will heed your sage advice. I have typically purchased used fire arms in the past through our local gun smith, he has long since retired so I am looking for a trusted replacement. I guess I'll stay local, I already have the CCW so there are multiple avenues for me to research.
Do you have a personal preference between the AR 15 and the AK 47, if so why is one superior to the other or is it just a matter of personal preference?

I personally prefer the AK operating system, to the AR system, but I prefer the 5.56 to the 7.62x39 because after 100yds, the AK round drops significantly, and because the 5.56 is a standard round, unless you live in the Eastern European, or Russian area. If you're looking for something in the more "exotic" realm of guns, I would suggest looking at the new Sig 556. Some companies, like Bushmaster offer AR's, with an AK gas system...but it adds 5 or 6 hundred to the gun. The main advantage to the AK system is, it takes less gas to operate, and works longer, dirtier, where as, the AR system tends to want to be temperamental if it's not kept clean, sometimes thats not always possible. If you really want to reach out to the 500 to 1000yd range, and you're not necessarily looking for a pistol grip style rifle, and you're willing to spend the cash, there's only one way to go. Springfield Armory M1A, low end is gonna be around $1400. High end, you're looking at $5000, maybe more, plus optics. Out of the box, with fixed iron sights, a standard M1A in the hands of a trained soldier can hit man sized targets at 500yds out. They're semi automatic, they fire a 7.62x51 (.308Win.) which is a standard round...always a plus, and they come with a 10 rnd mag, but you can get 20 rnds from the factory, (beware of cheap mags on these guns), I'm not sure about 30 rounders

I am looking for a legal semi auto rifle with a high capacity mag 30 rounds or more something like the AR 15 or the AK 47. Any suggested websites for quality used semi autos ? The key point here is that I am in the U.S. and I am looking for legal used semi autos.
Thanks in advance if you can point to reputable dealers.

The legal part depends on which part of the country you live in. Certain states have different laws about the AR and AK, things like detachable mags, flash suppressors (NOT silencers) pistol grips and such and some states still have a complete ban on one or both. Personally I used the AR type system for ten years in the military and think that with a little tuning and proper care it is a great rifle. However, it all depends on what you are going to use it for. One of the better things about the AR over AK is the ability to adapt it to almost any situation. You want a short range shooter, put on a holo sight and a collapsible stock. You want a long range tack driver, put on a bull barrel upper and decent optics. Another thing with the AR is the availability of after market parts, there are tons of companies out there specializing in the AR. The current national match AR I have has put many a round in the X ring with open sights with the trophies to match, and so has the M1A if you are willing to spend a little extra cake, so again it's all about your plans for the rifle. If you feel comfortable with it, PM me your location and I will hook you up with a list of suppliers and the AR/AK laws in your area, and answer any other questions you have

Totally missed this part of your post, and can not agree more. Except for the fact that the M1A is used in high power competition at 600 yards and not only can it hit a man sized target, but it can do it where ever the shooter wants. (the X ring on a 600 yard target is 6 inches and looks about the size of a flea at that distance)
Also, The M1A mags come in 5, 10, 20 and 25 round capacity and you are very right about cheap mags. Try to go for the ones from CMI. They are the military supplier and they are nothing but top quality. 44mag.com has always had the best prices that I have found so far on those and the good AR mags as well.

Personally, my favorite target long range rifle is the springfield m1a1 supermatch with a krieger barrel and mac millan camo stock http://www.springfield-armory.com/armory.php?version=53. FYI, only 20 not 25 bullet cap mags are available for the m1a1. Try to buy one in used condition but even on the second hand market, they are far to be cheap weapons.
About m4s, they are great weapons but if you like long range accuracy the 7.62*51 ammo is better. Of course price between 7.62*51 and 5.56*45 isn't the same.

If you can find any. I found some Remington/UMC factory ammo-5.56x45(.223) 55grn fmj, at a local sporting goods store for $7.99 a box (20rnds), worked out to $86 after tax. Not a bad price at all, but the only 7.62x51(.308) ammo they carry is Remington Core Lokt, or Winchester Power Point, at about $18 or $19 a box (20rnds), good for deer and such, and it'll cycle, but it's hunting ammo. The only places I was finding FMJ 150grn rounds was at gun shows, and if it was a name brand, it was about $15 a box (20rnds), or in 200rnd cases and a brand I've never heard of, or not American made...that's not going in my gun. So I guess to sum up, if your looking for a gun to fire a 7.62x51 round, as opposed to a 5.56x45 round, no matter what configuration you want, be it pistol grip, semi auto, or bolt action, you're going to spend about twice as much for the ammo for the larger caliber, and it's getting real hard to come by in the wake of a possible wave of new anti gun laws being passed. The sad thing is, even if you're thinking of getting the most non offensive, bolt action, or single shot hunting gun, the prices of ammo is going up, even for calibers that aren't of a military nature. But we shall see what happens in a few months, maybe we'll get lucky and he'll have enough common sense to focus on the issues that really matter right now.

Considering the literal doubling of munition prices over the last two years,
this is a good deal, IMO. They're as accurate as one could expect (approx. 2MOA @ 1oo yds - M1A Scout Squad - iron sights) for a "ball" (fmj) type of cartridge.

The cases are boxer primed, and you know what that means :D.

Do look around the aforementioned site. They're good people and the deliver exactly what they promise. :hatsoff:

DAmn ! about 5 years ago, I could get 2oo round cans of NATO 7.62.51 mm Aussie for 29.95. ;(

Thanks guys, all good info and much appreciated.
I got a 9 point buck yesterday so I wasn't on the boards at all.
I live in Ohio and the guns laws here are very liberal in a good way which is to say any non felon who takes the approved training course and files all the proper paperwork can get a concealed carry permit. Ohio, is fine with either the AK or the AR but they must be semi-auto on a class 3 Federal fire arms dealer can get a full auto.
I follow every single gun law and even when I do not agree with the laws I follow them because that is what repsonible gun ownership is. Well, that and make sure ALL weapons & ammo are locked up and out of reach from children. We have 3 kids to safety is priority one.
I am leaning toward the AR, I am looking for a semi auto tack driver at 300 yards.
My Savage 7 mm mag does the job but it only holds 4 shells.
Do you guys wanna see the deer ? I can't post a photo here but send me a link to a web site where I can post it and I'll put it up for you if you want. I noticed photo bucket was banned and I don't have any flicker style accounts.

Use imagevenue, and post a thumbnail. They might not get to bummed if you keep it to 1 or 2.

Anyone have any experience with the M-14? I've held one once and loved the feel, but can anyone give me an opinion on how easy it is to take care of and how accurate it is?

It is easy to clean and to care of, it is sub moa accurate. M14 with full auto fire selective mode aren't for sale and if you find one in pristine condition, be ready to spend 15000-20000$. The clinton administration mostly destroyed 500000 m14s. Now the m14 is only available in semi auto in the m1a1 form.

The M1A is a fine weapon. Be prepared to spend anywhere from $1300-$3000, depending on the model you choose. Many shooters use them for long range computation, and some special forces squads still use them.

Yup, they start around 2 grand here in California. If you could find one. I heard there's a year long back order.

Seems like every type in that genre is back ordered right now... I had to call throughout VA to find the Bushmaster M4 I just bought. The guy told me they can't keep anything in more than a day right now.

Looks like everyone is stocking up for either a zombie uprising, a Terminator-style holocaust, or for the US government to implode. :dunno:

Mine has been on back order for months...5 to be exact. I don't know why I'm getting another one, it's a pain in the ass to find rounds for the one I have. Maybe I'll sell it and buy something else. I have heard of back orders for some of the semi auto's...both rifle and pistol, but nothing regarding revolvers or bolt action rifles and most shotguns. Although ALL ammo is scarce....38spl, 9mm, .40, and .223, .308, most commonly. I guess 1 out of 3 is a pretty good guess.

This topic is a huge can of worms...but most gun owners are very responsible people and it sucks that every now and then some nutbag goes crazy and makes them look bad.

And guns don't float around by themselves and shoot...a person has to be behind it. Just like it takes a person to run someone over with a car,or it takes a person to stab someone. Funny how no one ever blames cars or knives.
