Marlin Camp Carbine .45ACP anyone?

...This was my little gully rifle (my dad's rifle actually) back when I was a half pint of a kid . . . I think that my brother traded it away for . . . god knows what . . black lighting for his bedroom . . or maybe accessories for his dirt bike maybe(?) :dunno:
I think that it's time to look for another one. :)

Aside: What accessories do you guys & gals like on your rifles/smoothbores?
Is the marketplace getting a little ridiculous, I mean, are you the type that has to have a rail up top, below, port and starboard? :1orglaugh It's unbelievable just how many accessories you can lever lock onto your long gun these days . . . accessories that just end up detached from the rail only to be collecting dust somewhere or maybe buried in your safe never to be seen again until you review your inventories. . .
''Oh, that's where those 3 sets of Swan throw rings went.'' :hammer:

Vid or action pic, please. :D

What does a cheap box of 12ga #8's cost these days?

You used to be able to buy those carbines pretty cheap...of course the ammo wasn't outrageously expensive back then either. I wouldn't mind a decent lever action .357. I would go for the .45LC or .44mag, but rounds are unbelievably expensive.

As far as accessories, I like a nice big tactical scope on the long range stuff. I have no problem with paying for quality optics. I will put an EOTech on the next semi 7.62 I buy, but as far as handguns go...3-dot night sights, that's about it. If I'm gonna carry it, I want it bone stock. A good civil attorney will go after a custom gun if you get dragged into court over a shooting.

Hum...my meager collection, let's see.

S&W S22 in .22 LR
Ruger Super Single Six in .22/.22 Mag
Kel-Tec P11 9MM
Glock 23 .40 S&W
Browning Stalker 12 gauge , 3" chamber
2 Ruger 10/22's one with a folding stock, the other with a target stock and a composite heavy barrel
Savage 12FV .22-250
Bulgarian AK-47 SLR95 7.62X39MM
1964 Remington 700 BDL .270

Fuck 50 MBG. Four words...Three Thirty Eight Lapua.

At this point, how easy is it to even get .338Lapua? If you can, it's running around $4 bucks a round, .50BMG is only $2 more! Unless you're making your living shooting a rifle, I can't see it. You can get 750 yds out of a .308, it's a standard NATO round, it's plentiful, and quite frankly, unless you spend 8 hours a day, every day, practicing...you are not pulling of a 1500 yd shot, or even a 1000 yd shot. Even if you have that skill, where in the hell are you ever gonna need that, in an urban setting.

When shit hits the fan, you need 4 guns. A 6 or 4 inch barrel .357mag., a 12ga pump, with an 18" and a 28" w/interchangeable chokes, a large bore, scoped bolt action rifle....either 30-06, or .308, and a short barreled (20") lever action, in .357mag. If your revolver is .44mag, or .45LC, your lever action, should match that. I suppose if you have semi auto's, that's fine, but what I've listed are more reliable, and have less moving parts.

All of these off the wall, uncommon calibers are nice to have, when you already have what you need. When it comes time to buy a few extra boxes of ammo to have on hand, I don't wanna have to spend $100 bucks, for 20 rounds.

I tend to agree. I believe in the "universal round" system. Most of your mainline guns should be calibers that could be easily acquired from other sources, if the need arise.

.22 lr
20ga / 12ga
9mm/.38/.357/.45
.223/.308/30.06

It's cool to have the off caliber or wildcats, but don't rely on them in a worst case scenario. I have my hand built Remington slug gun, that friends call "Whispering Death"... (with a custom ported/rifled/20in barrel) and shooting slugs at a couple bucks a pop can get expensive. But slamming a .58 cal, 1 ounce slug into a Wild Boar at 200 yards is the equivalent of hitting it with a UPS truck at 75.

Speaking of wildcats . . . This cartridge is a hell of a kick! It's basically .45 Win Mag braas trimmed down to . . what . . .993 is it(?) Anyway, the brass is the same length as the 10mm pistol brass.
I've chronoed Sierra 10 mm 135gr JHPs in the 1840 fps range and 10mm Speer 200GR TMJs in the (1,260 fps range +/-).

It all began when I sent Bar Sto Precision Machine a Kimber Slide via UPS and I received back the slide along with a 5.8'' .40 Super bull barrel ready to go! All I had to do was buy a reverse plug, 1ea. 22lb, 1ea. 24 lb recoil spring and a pack of those shock buffer ting-o-majiggers just for the hell of it (I don't know whether they help or not . . the jury was/is still out on it last time I checked).

Understand that it's all just for fun, as you're not gonna be any more of a bad ass with this cartridge than you are with a well placed 800 fps 230 fmj in .45ACP!
Nope, no defensive cartridge here! Can you say overkill?

That's impressive. Necking down a .45 case. I would suspect you wouldn't get many reloads off that brass due to the pressures.

I'll have to say, I'll be sticking with Ruger. Sure they may not be pretty, but they are tanks. They will take a beating and keep going. I recently got a Ruger SR9 (Green frame/Black slide) and that is the best poly pistol I've ever shot. Stuck a TLR-3 onto the rail and it groups under 2 inches on rapid fire drills. That is my go-to handgun.

The Ruger is a excellent gun, i agree. I looked at CZ as well. The S&W has proven good, i only have about 200 rounds through it so far.

Actually, I'm using two different mfgrs of brass, the one that is head stamped ''Triton .40 Super'' is a Starline brass product that has a small primer pocket, while the other is Winchester mfgr. ''.45 Win. Mag. trimmed to .985-.993 length and then formed into shape by the use of a Redding Die set. Both variants of the brass I'm using have no problem with the pressure because both have a much thicker case head and inner wall as compared to the regular run of the mill .45ACP brass (as evidenced when you cut this brass in half lengthwise).

The original factory loadings for this cartridge we're over the top for me, I mean, you can imagine the speed of which the slide must travel in order to cycle these gems, particularly when firing the 135 grainer @ 1,800 fps (give or take +/- 50 or 60 fps), :surprise: . . .definitely well beyond the original intended design of the all steel Kimber Custom II 1911!
Remarkably, after firing some 3k rounds of .40 Sup. through the Custom II, everything is still snug fitting, the slide to frame as well as the slide stop pin. . . . . great reasonably priced products, those Kimmys.

I almost forgot to mention the area where there is a weakness in the system and it comes in the form of the brass . . . . the case mouths have a tendency to split in the expander die after 2 firings.
In that spirit, I load down to levels that tend not to be so hot, usually 100fps greater than the factory ''.400 Cor Bon'' loadings . . . then I've been able to successfully reload the brass up to 4 times before the mouths split.

FWIW . . .A cheaper way to shoot .338

btw - The only flaws on Nosler seconds are cosmetic in nature.

Damn! Has it really gone up that much? :surprise:
I haven't been keeping track of prices over the last, oh, 3 years or so . . . I guess we did ok for ourselves when the early notices came down the pike. 6 - 7 years ago we were getting 144 Gr 7.62 NATO Ball (Aussie Lot) NR cases, 200 rounds on strip clips in bandoleers and in the can out the door for about $35.00! It was less than $40.00 I know for a fact. I wish that I had the foresight to have purchased an entire ''shorty'' shipping container full of the stuff just like the sporting goods store had dropped off in front of their store. :(

You should never announce your collection. Because not everyone is knowledgeable about all the state gun laws and opps, you happen to have something that might be considered a felony and open a world of shit for yourself. Don't tell anyone. Just possess the skills and knowledge to use them when the shit does hit the fan.
