Guillermo Del Toro departs “The Hobbit”

That is quite sad. I had high hopes.
Let's see who the replacement will be. I honestly don't know who besides Peter Jackson himself (or perhaps Ridley Scott) could replace del Toro for this kind of movie. Directors for these kinds of films are rare. Some have ventured into that direction (like Sung-su Kim, Gore Verbinski or Peter Weir), but only one or twice. No surprise the Warcraft movie is being pushed back again and again and no director has been found yet.

I'd like to see Judd Apatow take over. Or Jon Watters. That'd be great.

Aw, come on. Hellboy wasn't THAT bad. :o

Mike Mignola disagrees...and he was there while it was being made! ;)

I always thought that Del Toro's movies are great only when they aren't based on some existing comic book franchise. I'm a huge hellboy fan, but the movies were eh. And I hate the Blade movies...but I seem to be alone there.

PS: Speaking of Mignola, The Amazing Screw On Head is up on YouTube in three parts (for now). The art and character design is directly inspired from Mignola's work, the animation is top notch and Paul Giamatti does the voice acting. It's much better than the Hellboy animated stuff IMO.

I agree. I've read some of the Hellboy volumes (which are pretty good) and I'm a big fan of Dark Horse comics.

Anyways, movie adaptations never really live up to the comics because they have to be allotted into two hours and the content is often dulled down to make it more universally appealing to audiences.

In regards to Del Toro, Pan's Labyrinth was a good example of his directing ability.

I really don't see why Jackson didn't just stay on and finish the tale, it's his baby after all.

Either way I'm not a fan of the 'saga' so I really don't have much to say about this because I'm not particularly interested. Del Toro's a very talented director, amongst the best working today I would say, to go on and work on other projects may be the right move for his career, rather than having to spend six years on the same one.

Too bad, I liked Toro's work on Pan's Labyrinth. Other than the logical choice of Peter Jackson to take over, Zack Snyder of 300 and the Watchmen could be another interesting replacement.

just my 0.02...

I am disappointed in this news and think the only one that can do it right now is Jackson. I love Del Toro's vision and imagination for his movies. There are rumors that there will be a movie based on the video game Shadow of the Colossus (which is a game that proves video games can be art) and Del Toro is the only one I'd ever trust in doing a movie of that.

Loved Pan's Labyrinth too. :D

I heard Sam Raimi was a possible replacement, at least he says wants to do it.
Peter Jackson has a lot of other stuff going on and is unlikely to take over.
