Good applications for converting AVI's to burn to DVD

I'm new to burning DVD's as I only just bought myself a DVD Writer last week. From what Nero's told me I can't burn avi's onto DVD to watch on a DVD player so I take it I have to convert them to a different format? Is there any specific applications that are good for doing this? Cheers.

If you have the latest FULL Nero 6 package it should have come with a sister program called "NeroVision Express" (comes under Nero Digital, in your start menu). This program allows you to burn any video file to dvd .wmv, .mpg, .mpeg, .avi etc. it's really easy to use just select your video files, create a dvd menu and click burn and Nero encodes thems all and does the magic!

It's the best imo I always use it

Note: if you haven't got "NeroVision Express" you can download @ Download but your main Nero program must be registed!

Be warned though, if you burn a disc full of AVIs it can take 'effing ages (depending on your pc speed).
My pc is no slouch, but I've know it take 20hrs to do a disc.

Most of that time was due to the program having to convert the AVIs to Nero's own video format...Now I don't bother, I just burn the AVIs as data files and play them on my pc.

I use two excellant programs.

1 - Aare AVI to VCD DVD SVCD MPEG Converter
2 - Cucusoft AVI to VCD DVD MPEG Converter Pro.

Can't recommend one over the other. Both are quality pieces of software that do the job.

winavi video convertor is good. i have a 2.6 cpu and it takes less than 1 hour
