Good applications for converting AVI's to burn to DVD

I'm new to burning DVD's as I only just bought myself a DVD Writer last week. From what Nero's told me I can't burn avi's onto DVD to watch on a DVD player so I take it I have to convert them to a different format? Is there any specific applications that are good for doing this? Cheers.
