Georgian tanks have entered Chechnya

Georgian tanks have entered Russia's breakaway region of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, says Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Russia has been fighting separatists in order to regain control of the province, which had declared independence since the 1990s.

Georgian troops in the Chechen Republic capital said their artillery had begun firing at Russian forces, Georgian news agencies reported.

Georgia's president earlier promised to defend the citizens in the Chechen Republic.

Georgia's defence ministry said more than 10 of its peacekeeping troops in the Chechen Republic had been killed and 30 wounded in the Russian offensive. At least 15 civilians are also reported dead.

'Clear intrusion'

Russia's president said 150 Georgian tanks and other vehicles had entered the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.

He told CNN: "Georgia is fighting a war with us in our own territory."

Mr Medvedev, who has called on reservists to sign up for duty, said: "This is a clear intrusion on another country's territory."

Georgia has no right to invade Russia to defend the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria!

Georgia has no right to invade Russia to defend the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria!
Why not?

Or in other terms - what gives the Russian Republic greater "rights" than Georgia about what goes on in Ichkeria?

I'm curious and just want to know...

cheers,

I don't think that Georgia intervening in Ichkeria is gonna help the situation at all. If they decided to declare independence over a decade ago, I doubt they declared it just so they could become a part of another country. I might be wrong, as I'm not really informed on the happenings of the region, but I think that the problem should be between Russia and Ichkeria. It sounds as if Georgia is just using Ichkeria as an excuse to engage Russia.

Well, somehow I think attacking the Russians will only make then angry. And angry Russians are never a good thing, especially when they have guns and tanks. I don't think the Russians will go far with this, though. If the Russians want to prove their military strength, they would do it against someone a little better then Georgia.

Well, Georgia is a start for them. A bully doesn't become a bully by picking on the strong ones; he becomes a bully by picking on the weak ones.

Is somewhere outhere.
I only see more forms of terrorism developing here.I think the Russians
will stablilize the situation by force. But maybe the Chechens will join
the Georgians afterwards which will again spoil the lives of innocent people.

South Ossetia is not Chechnya...

Are you drunk or just bad at geography?

You understand nothing is just black and white my friend. He isn't either drunk or bad at georgaphy, but realistically a mixture of the two - along the scale somewhere from 'Drunk as shit but excellent at geography', or 'sober as shit, and terrible at geography'.

I personally think he is slightly drunk, and very bad at geography. :1orglaugh

what are you talking? you don't even know whats happening. where is chechnya? its not part of georgia. this fucking russians started attack from osetia which in past was our land and they took it from us. and now we georgians entered osetia started fighting them and when this cowards saw that georgians also have strong militarization, they started bombing peaceful people who live nearby osetia, not soldiers but PEACEFUL PEOPLE who have no guns many of them are killed i have seen it with my own eyes.
EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW THAT RUSSIANS ARE COWARDS THEY ATTACK UNARMED GEORGIAN PEOPLE THERE ARE MANY WOMEN AND CHILDREN AMONG THEM. THEY SOON WILL COME IN TBILISI, CAPITAL OF GEORGIA, WE WILL FIGHT TILL THE DEATH, BUT KNOW THAT IF THEY TAKE OUR LANDS THEY WONT STOP AND SOON WILL ATTACK OTHER PARTS OF EUROPE FROM HERE.

Before people start feeling so smug and superior about their geography skills they should compare the original post with the above link. Take a long look. Does it seem odd that the number of tanks is exactly the same? That the Georgian president's exact words are put in Medvedev's mouth? That Georgia and Russia have been exactly switched? That South Ossetia has been replaced with Chechnya?
The fact that it can be done so seamlessly is the point.

Anyone who can glance at a headline knows that Russia has invaded Georgia regarding the breakaway republic of South Ossetia.

The question is how different is that from if Georgia invaded Russia regarding the Chechen Republic? Chechnya, for those who don't know, is Russia's breakaway republic. If Georgia were to invade Russia to defend Chechnya, Russia would be saying exactly what Georgia is now. Yet when Georgia makes the same argument, Russia rejects it. When Russia invades Georgia regarding South Ossetia they consider it justified.

Isn't Russia being hypocritical?

The only one on the right track was Roughneck who said "what gives the Russian Republic greater "rights" than Georgia about what goes on in Ichkeria?

I'm curious and just want to know..."

We all want to know.

Well, Stephen Colbert said it best: If Putin was working at the GAP, floor manager would be the most pwoerful position in all of Russia.

what the fuck you lookin at?
so now they are invading back? Hmmm...this will be an interesting topic between these 2 countries over the course of the coming weeks.

I support Georgia and Chechnya for independence, but there's no way that they are going to accomplish anything effective in this action, other than provoking Russia to attack them and to justify taking more land and/or control of the region.

They were hoping to get sympathy from Nato and thier western allies, but they miscalculated. They are not going to go up against Russia, it's as simple as that. They only care about war when it's profitable, they don't give a shit about really fighting for democracy.

Apparently I am no Jonathan Swift.
Don't beat up on yourself - irony is hard to master. Why, even Swift's genius wasn't truly recognized in his time! :)
