Fuckin' Somalian pirates!

You know, the West has become so wussified, particularly within the chain of command in military exercises. For example - In order to defend oncoming aggression, you must first consult with a 1/2 dozen bureaucrats . . . by that time, you're either sunk or DEAD !
To actually engage the foe, head on, would likely get you a court marshall. What the hell is this ? Everything is inside out and reverse ! There's simply too much bureaucracy and it's cloggin the artery to rational thought.

Kill 'em bastards at the first sign of aggression !
Like men used to do . . dammit !

Fuckin A brother. I went from my mission briefings saying "Capture/Kill" to "Capture/Detain". I don't remember having to turn in my balls. WTF!!!!

There are plenty of sea vessels which can blow those fucking armed rafts out of the water, and the "pirates"into pulp. How about a nice Goalkeeper on your East-African ass??!!

Ummm, it's sheer numbers here ...

A cargo ship or oil tanker or whatever, reports his position every x minutes to the coast guard (ie: US COast Guard, NATO ship, whatever). When they get attacked, they report it to them, at the same time, a couple of ready F-15 or whatever planes report to the area (a few minutes away when flying at 1,000 km/h). They spot the pirates, the unload a missile, problem solved.
How do you "spot a pirate"?

First off, there are as many ships around the horn of Africa as their are aircraft airborne over the US on any given day -- about 5,000.
So if you just start reporting anything and everything, you'd have so many false alarms that it would be impossible to keep up.

It's not exactly easy to "spot a pirate from space" either.

Small, Anal Note: The US Coast Guard does operate here and F-15's are land based (and far, far away in the more eastern part of Saudia Arabia).
Also note that to achieve Mach 2+ speeds, every aircraft burns severely through their fuel at afterburner (typically 3-4x), limiting their operational area (to a hundred miles or two).

Most of these ideas “napalm the coast of Somalia” “shoot em all” etc really show a lack of understanding to the problem.

If someone gets their car car-jacked in New York, is the solution to blow up the city? Or just have the police start blasting cars because they look like car jackers?

It's because there is no end to the anarchy and lack of respect for all oozing from that country. They're pissing on 21st century civilisation, but when the going gets really rough we as Western countries can cough up the money to help them out.
Saving the present generation of younglings from starvation means saving more people to prolong anarchy and piracy.
Nuke em, sink em, nape em, kill em.

The New York Times had an article yesterday about the newest measures they're taking. One of the smarter ones that I noticed was the use of shipping lanes protected by warships. That makes a lot more sense than this hunt and peck method of randomly searching for them over 100,000 sq.mi. of ocean. Get enough ships together and you can provide a clear corridor past the entire coast of Somalia.

How come no one is calling them Terrorist?:dunno:

Because we usually associate terrorists with operating within a terrorist organization for a political or religious purpose. These guys are working purely for personal profit. They may be causing quite a bit of "terror," but their goal is money, not intimidation.

Now, that's not to say there's not a terrorist connection here. The government of Somalia is currently listed as a terrorist organization, and its not a huge leap to ask if they're getting kickbacks to let the pirates continue operating unopposed. But that's peripheral to their primary purpose of stealing and extorting money.

The difference between New York and Somalia is obvious. Legitimate government of Somalia does not control the situation in the country. In fact it is a refugee government, and they has to temporary stay in Kenya. Country is controled by groups of militants, and they are in a state of war with the national army of Somalia.

Those militants and pirates are the real forces, they have the real power. But they are OUTLAWS. They are illegal armed bands.

And since they start to attack ships which belong to other countries it is not interior affairs of Somalia any longer. Altogether it means, that there are legal grounds to use force against them.

If army is not supposed to be used in a case like that, what the fuck is it supposed to be used for?! Only for the big and cute III world war?

And if some authorities use the term "rouge state" towards North Korea, Iran etc... Why this definition can't be applied to the real rouge state? Which produce real threat every day?

What is the difference between hijacking a plane, and hijacking a ship? But when a plane is hijacked it is such a breaking news, and I can't remember any case in recent history when money were paid to save the hostages. Usually negotiations, or special forces operation puts an end to such like hijackes. But pirates in Somalia were able to recieve more than $ 30 000 000 in this year only.

What about all that precision-guided weapons? It is funny how helpless army is in the teeth of pirates. So helpless, that I would never believe that they are really so weak.

My point was nuking the horn of Africa or blowing up innocent merchant marines off the coast in response to the actions of a few criminals is not really an alternative.

I have not heard of any American vessels being attacked, so let the Russians deal with them.

From the NYTimes article I posted above:

Geoff Morrell, the Pentagon press secretary, released statistics on Wednesday showing that so far in 2008, there had been 95 reports of piracy attacks in the Gulf of Aden and surrounding waters, with 39 of those resulting in the capture of vessels. An estimated 330 sailors from 25 nations remain hostages, with no known American citizens among them.

There have been no reports of attacks on United States-flagged vessels, and officials have interpreted that record as a sign that the pirates do not want to provoke the American Navy directly.

Right. It's better to sleep now. Then get up one fine morning and shout "Al Quaida (or Al Qaeda)".

It's going to happen you know, where there is money, there are terrorists. Drug/piracy, all are money now. But who cares - sincerely?

Many cargo ships are with the flag of foreign country for economical reasons. But it doesn't mean that shipowner is from Bahamas or something.

Also do not forget that cargo owner/buyer suffers a lot: for example 2 million barrels of oil in the hijacked tanker were going to the USA. Isn't it provoking enough?

Did you read the article? It clearly states that piracy and Al Quaida are different issues.

Sure, terrorism is going to happen, but the motives of a drug dealer and pirate are not the same as a terrorist.

Terrorists are not in it for the money.
