“Further to the medical problem which prevented Timo Glock from participating in yesterday’s qualifying session for the European Grand Prix in Valencia, the Marussia F1 Team can confirm that Timo is unable to compete in today’s race.

“Timo received medical guidance yesterday afternoon and his symptoms suggest that he is suffering from an intestinal infection. He has been advised that it would be unwise for him to race given the severity of the complaint and that he should focus instead on recuperating.

“Timo spent the evening resting at his hotel in Valencia and is in good spirits. He will return home later today.”

Maria de Villota is only a test driver and does not hold a super license, so only Charles Pic will represent Marussia on track.

Wow! Race of the year!

Lots of action from start to finish.
What was Maldonado thinking? No point in trying that there - easy pass later on with a lap to go. Dick!

Penalties from the race:

Pastor Maldonado: 20 second time penalty
Kamui Kobayashi: 5 place grid penalty for Silverstone
Jean-Eric Vergne: 10 place grid penalty, and a €25,000 fine

Man, I was really rooting for Grosjean! Bad luck for both him and Vettle with the bad alternator on the Renault engines. I'm sure Renault isn't too pleased either.

And WTF was up with McClaren and pit stops. You'd think they'd have it figured out by now.

I know that's he's a greedy, old ****. But the greedy, old **** turned F1 into what it is today. Without Bernie, F1 could look like IndyCar or the WRC: struggling to remain relevant. He's old. He'll be dead in a few years anyway. At worst, give him probation and let him make a few more deals for us.

His ********* are too dumb to come in out of the rain. So it's not as if there will be any more Ecclestones in F1 once he's gone. Can't we let this one slide? Please! :dunno:

Maria de Villota is getting her first crack at testing this week! She has an aero correlation run at Duxford Airfield, and then she will be the first to test Marussia's comprehensive new upgrade...

“At approximately 09.15hrs BST this morning, Maria De Villota had an accident in the team’s MR-01 race car at Duxford Airfield where she was testing the car for the first time,” the team explained in a statement.

“The accident happened at the end of her first installation run and involved an impact with the team’s support truck. Maria has been transferred to hospital. Once her medical condition has been assessed a further statement will be issued.”

Although the full severity of the injury is not yet known, Sky Sports F1 sources have confirmed that De Villota required assistance from the emergency services in the **** of the crash and that Maria was unable to extract herself from the car after the collision.

It's understood that the injuries are life-threatening.

My thoughts and prayers are with Maria De Villota. From the description provided by BBC radio presenter Chris Mann, this was a bizarre accident:

"She got into the car, fired it up and did a test run at probably about 200mph in the rain," Mann said.

"The car was slightly misfiring but there didn't seem to be any concerns.

"She came back into the area we were in with the engineers. She slowed down but then suddenly, inexplicably accelerated through the crowd and smashed into the side of the truck.

"The top of her car and her helmet seemed to take the brunt of it.

"She didn't move for about 15 minutes.

"Fire crews were there within seconds and the ambulance within minutes.

"After a while we thought we saw some movement of her hands but she appeared to be *********** or unable to move for quite some time."

I'm certainly not assigning any blame to De Villota, the team or anyone else. Something could have happened to the car to cause it to suddenly accelerate. But I will say that the practice of putting older, relatively unskilled, inexperienced drivers into "testing" roles (just to get a fat check from them or their sponsors) needs to be looked at by the FIA, in my opinion. Upon learning that 32 year old De Villota lacked the necessary "super license", that allows a driver to participate in sanctioned Formula One events, it strikes me as wrong to put such a driver into a Formula One car for anything other than a controlled demonstration run.

But for right now, I'm happy to read that she's at least conscious:

Caterham reserve driver Giedo van der Garde will demonstrate the car at the annual City Racing event in Rotterdam on August 26. Nico Rosberg's participation in the event has been confirmed by Mercedes.

On a related note, did anyone see or attend Goodwood?
