Films that were good not popular

Loved Equilibrium more than the Matrix.....

Equilibrium is a pretty good movie, though I don't think it's better than The Matrix, but you have to look at The Matrix as a stand alone movie and not consider the sequels.

Another good movie that has the same ideas as the Matrix but was more realalistic was "eXistenZ" Because the game systems were living, breathing organic items that plugged into your Spinal Cord

It really pisses me off that I caught that movie about 2/3 into it,so I really didn't know what was "really" going on.I really need to go back and watch that thing from start to finish. The only thing that I can remotely remember about it at this point is that it was very much a David Cronenberg film.

As a side note,I think this thread title is a misnomer.I know that the OP stated that he was looking for good movies that didn't do to well at the box office, but were still good. But just because a movie didn't make a lot of money doesn't mean that they are not popular.I guess this can only apply to movies that are recently released and haven't yet had the chance to find an audience through DVD rentals and sales.

When I think of "not popular",I think of films that most people haven't even heard of,and eXistenZ is an excellent example.

I'm not ragging on anyone,I'm just saying.

Children of Men
Little Children

Quite different movies of course, but I saw them the same weekend.

I really like The Punisher movie w/ Thomas Jane.

Best part of the movie is when the dude says for him to let God have his vengance and Frank Castle says "God's sitting this one out" I love that line.

I loved Little Children(the movie, not actual little children.Had to state that for the mods.;)),while it was an uncomfortable movie,it was no where near as disturbing as Happiness, which I also liked.

Yes!!!!!! That line is so badass! While, they changed somethings here and there, they did keep a lot of things from the comic. I'm a huge fan of the Punisher and character, and I simply love this movie.

But why the hell were they in Tampa?!:dunno:

Sorry, but I thought that The Punisher was pure shit.Just my opinion though.

There was an animated movie called "Wizards". Check it out!

You know, I watched that in early years. I couldn't wait to get my mitts on it again. (Until returning to the States, I would have to wait a long while to order a movie - I waited a year for Enki Bilal's "Immortal" - I didn't use Amazon at that time. Then some f*#ck stole it from me). Then when it did come I wondered what I saw in it, 'cept for the wizard's babe. I was just thinking of her when looking at the sexy faerytale thread.

I had no idea 'Fight Club' wasn't a box hit. I was under the impression it was huge. I still have to see it; not into bloodsport. Still need to see all of 'Blood In Blood Out". I was told it rawks. Yeah, "Equilibrium", nice, clean Sci Fi lines there in the big concrete jungle. Bale has a brooding smoulder Keanu Reeves doesn't. Keanu did well with Sandra Bullock imo. Maybe Neo needed the slight sense of being withdrawn Keanu brought. Not all male films are popular to all. Those that are big are often the ones with effects, even then it mostly appeals to a male audience.

Thanks for the contributions. This is the 1st thread I made that actually made it past page 2, or at least 3.

I will go now to put thank you notes on everyone's profile page.

:D

There was a DVD in 2008 that was about people being used for body parts. It showed how they were invited to be slaves or pets. I had been wondering whether a movie would be made where a woman would be nude right throughout. Well, a few weeks later I bought this. I don't recall the name. It wasn't quite the subject matter I would have liked.

It shows an attractive young woman desperate for a bit of love, money and attention, who agrees to be some man's pet. He begins to really like her, so, when the time comes to hand her over, he fights.

She is naked all the time, kept inside a cage, as are others like her.

Shows how really wonderful, caring and advanced some humans really can be, you know.

I am still waiting for a good Modesty Blaise movie. Not the Qeuentin Tarantino one. I guess they just need the right actress. Summer Glau isn't quite good looking enough. Lucy Lawless is too old by now. I seriously doubt Jennifer Garner would do this. It would need someone with great stage presence, like Charlize Theron, who can kick butt and be naked when called for. Maybe Rhona Mitra.

Oh, another goodie was that 'Beowulf' with Angelina Jolie.
Oh.
My.
Gawsh.

Idiocracy

I was just talking to a few people about this movie. I've only seen parts of it and am in the process of tracking it down. I'll probably have rejoin Netflix to watch it.

I read that Fox decided not to promote it, because of threats of lawsuits from all the large corporations that Mike Judge slams in the movie - Fudruckers and Starbucks.

^^ :hatsoff:

And 'Whale Rider".
The soundtrack must be played as loud as your speakers can go without distorting. Especially there near the last third of the film. Ossie and New Zealand actors are good.

But why the hell were they in Tampa?!:dunno:

Budget reasons. I think the director spoke about the Tampa setting in that Extended Cut that came out a few years ago. It definately wasn't by choice, but it was very clear that Thomas Jane and Jonathan Hensleigh wanted their proposed sequel to be in New York for the next go around.

Unfortunately, or fortunately (in your viewpoint) .. that never panned out. :2 cents:

Yes, the sequel would have been great, but instead in morphed into Punisher: War Zone. Which i enjoyed, but i don't think it is really a good film.

Yeah, Punisher War Zone certainly isn't a great movie, but I appreciated it for the simple fact that atleast it was a bit more akin to the Garth Ennis Punisher comic books where Frank Castle can be, and often is, extremely brutal.

Gattaca, that was one really deep movie. What is stronger? Genetic perfection or the human will to succeed? Lots of ethical questions about genetic engineering in humans and what could happen.

I loved Warzone. It was comically brutal, and that's what I was looking for considering that I've never liked the Punisher character anyway.

Some other good movies that I'm sure almost no one knows about are May and Roman. Two pretty twisted indie movies.

Also there was this movie back in the early 90s called Boxing Helena with Julian Sands and Serilyn Fenn.

One of my favorites to come out recently was Lars And The Real Girl.
