To me, Kubrick could never top his late 60's through mid 70's output. 2001 is nearly incomprehensible, but its tremendous success - built on acid-trippers - ****** the industry to view sci-fi movies as more than simply cheap b-movies. Clockwork Orange is, probably, his most mainstream film. in terms of classic narrative flow and protagonist/antagonist dynamics. Lastly, Barry Lyndon brought Kubrick back to experimentation, this again with narrative, but with lighting as well. Yet, he did not achieve another success.

That said, I've never been a big fan of any of his movies, at least in a desert-island scenario.
