English Humor??

I used to love Benny Hill, man the women on that show! It's made a hell of an impression on my ******** mind :shock:

I used to like Billy Connolly - until his dumb-ass comments about Kenneth Bigley (a Brit hostage held in Iraq) last October:

Shortly after Connolly joked about the hostage's impending demise ("Aren't you the same as me, don't you wish they would just get on with it?"), Kenneth Bigley was ******** in Iraq.

I can take broad, even offensive humour (Roy "Chubby" Brown comes to mind). But joking about that poor soul, just felt wrong.
 
Ironically enough, my first exposure to British humour came via the likes of Benny Hill and then PBS programs as well.

Even today, I still sit and watch programmes like:

Monty Python's Flying Circus;
Fawlty Towers;
Blackadder;
Red Dwarf;
Mr. Bean;
Are You Being Served?;
Chef;
Keeping Up Appearances

There's a few more I'm sure, but names escape me. All in all, I kinda like that dry, sardonic wit and droll sense of humour.
 
I have to bump this thread with the British tv show "Coupling", thesafestplace mentioned it in Premium Link Upgrade .
They showed one of my favourite episodes yesterday (" Premium Link Upgrade ") and damn, I was rolling on the floor laughing. I just love that kind of humor, it's definitely one of the best tv shows I know.

Someday all of us board members here should meet and watch all of the "Coupling" episodes. :1orglaugh

The Young Ones and The Fast Show are very very funny.
If your talking stand-up then Peter Kay and Lee Evans are just superb. Theyre both into British humour aswell, just everyday life in your average British ******. As they say, its funny because its true.
 
Alan Partridge! now thats genius! I'll never stop laughing at the episode were he gets so bored at his travelodge that he walks down to a petrol station to buy some de-icer that he doesn't need, and theres just a really depressing shot of him walking along a motorway singing 'Goldfinger' hahaha brilliant!
Also Steve Coogan has a new series out soon called "Saxondale" where he plays an ex-roadie turned pest controller!

That's such a funny episode, I have all 4 series as .avi files and they are so funny, even with repeated viewing.

I can't believe the americans tried to remake it, I mean how would Jeff work if he wasn't a crazy Welshman? And it's been said above, but why remake the Office too? I hope the people who slate 'English humour' (whatever that may be) are doing so based on the originals, not the remakes...

Haha! LOL I forgot about Cock-****-Partridge lol. I have series 1 and 2 on DVD. They are brilliant.
 
I grew up watching Benny Hill, and Monty Python BEFORE they made the movies...when they were on public TV in the early days. I could watch Benny ALL DAY, and never get tired of it.
 
You can't generalise about British humour any more than you can generalise about American humour.

Unless that is, you really do think there's no difference between I Love Lucy and the late Bill Hicks.
 
****** Ted, Red Dwarf, and of course The Good Life. Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin was whacked. Too many to mention in one breath, and they take them off before season 10 when you absolutely can't stand them anymore.
 
I got a good laugh out of "the Office"... It was shown on the ABC here. Of course some clown in the U.S. thought they would try and imitate the show using Yank actors... It is quite bad!!!

Noone can do British humour like the Poms!!!:thumbsup:

I actually thought that The Office american version was quite good. Of course, not as funny as the original but still a good laugh.:1orglaugh
