Are Dj's Real Musicians?

So I'm at the gym and they have live Dj's spinning at least once a week in the gym. Long story short.. I was talking to the DJ cause I knew him a while back from school and he was telling me all about his DJ gigs. I thought it was ridiculous, he was telling me about how he's spent thousands on his DJ rig and all this bullshit, he was a total douchebag about being a DJ and I get the odd feeling that he thinks he is a real musician. I hate this crap, I mean I've been playing Bass, guitar, drums, and keys for about 7 years now and I can't even consider myself a halfway decent musician and all this guy does is put in a bunch of money into a DJ rig and the fucker thinks he's Bach or something....

Im starting to think that computerized systems are making the basic 4 or 5-instrument band fade out, just like bass and guitar replaced tuba and banjo back in the old New orleans Jazz days and I think that's a terrible fate for music... Your Thoughts?

Wall of text, I know but what do you guys think... Do you believe DJ's are real musicians and are the future of music, or are they just posers?

If they don't create the music, they aren't musicians.

Musicians? Hell fucking no. Artists yes, musicians no.

i cant speak for that DJ, but I know there are plenty of real DJS in the clubs and stages that ARE legitimate musicians...its a skill that involves a lot more than you would think. Obviously you have to bee good at it just like anything else, but its definitely a form of music. I know turntables probably dont qualify as an instrument to most, but to me the best DJS in the world create music with sounds in a way that isnt very traditional. Since the technology has only been utilized in the past 40 years or so, I would say that they are musicians of a new kind. At least the ones who actually put work into the music and dont just sit there and play music...but in the end I am not going to sit there and say a guy like Tiesto or Van Dyk is not a musician...they have more musical talent that I could ever wish to have.

I say it different. Musicians can do great as DJs, and create good music, but DJs in general can't do shit when confronted with an actual instrument.

yes, but the flaw here is that you dont have to be able to play an insrument to be a musician...An instrumentalist is a person who can play an instrument dont confuse the 2...

A musician is a person who writes, performs, or makes music.

A singer/vocalist might not know how to play an instrument but surely they are a musician?...

Lol I kind of figured this poll would be very lopsided. The DJ just takes other peoples music and plays it. I wouldnt even consider a rapper a musician. I think of them as poets.

if you're talking a DJ like that who simply selects songs to play that are pre-written then definitely NOT...if you're talking a DJ who's actually creating original material then yes, he's a musician

simply put, creating original music or re-creating music using an instrument of some variety defines a musician...making a playlist and pushing play, adjusting some levels and doing some fading and other simple DJ tricks is in no way a musician

Ya they're musicians. They're making music. I'd consider a dj who spins his own music more of a musician than some hack guitarist in a cover band.

Y'all both are right. In fact the select DJ's that make their own music and are truly artists are more musicians than some singer who uses shit written for them and sings everything through autotune.

No.

Since they do not create their own music, then they're not musicians.

kind of, they can turn semi ok music into some epic shyte. Take dubstep for example...UKF dubstep for that matter almost everyone of their works is straight epic

Depends on the DJ. Mostly, no. But there are some.

Fatboy Slim for example, I think of him as a musician. Or DJ Shadow.

I've seen a few DJs live who make such an incredible noise with their turntables, it has to be classed as an instrument.
