I am a failure to the Korean side of my family
What about human beat boxes, or bucket and trash can drummers?

Of course. They work in the music industry and would be defined as performance artists. Some worked up to a reputation through hard work, talent and skill. Others not so much. Sounds pretty much like every other classification within the music industry. Some are hacks. A true artist wouldn't give a shit.

I view them as computer programmers. Just as a computer programmer is an artist in his own way, or a web designer is. However, they are only seldomly musicians. In my opinion, if you view DJs as musicians than we should view studio Engineers as musicians which we often don't. I understand the idea of creativity being utilized during a DJ's "performance" but as another poster viewed a guitar player as having the capability of being an instrumentalist but not necessarily a musician, I view DJ's in the same light. In the same light, but just with less time and hard work (concerning dexterity) than an traditional musical instrumentalist.

my two cents.

If they make music then yes you could call djs musicians :)
They don't make music, they sample music and put shitty beats under it. It's incredibly easy to call yourself a "dj" these days because everything is automated. They just copy, cut, and paste. That is not a musician. I hate this recent dubstep trend and I wish it would go the fuck away.

Turntableists, on the other hand, could be considered musicians. They use the turntable as an instrument.

yes, but the flaw here is that you dont have to be able to play an insrument to be a musician...An instrumentalist is a person who can play an instrument dont confuse the 2...

A musician is a person who writes, performs, or makes music.

A singer/vocalist might not know how to play an instrument but surely they are a musician?...

Singers do play an instrument in my opinion, It's also one of the hardest, you have to be in time rhythimacally and also play melody with just your voice.

And seeing the poll results, I have to say im pretty much glad that people are still sane.

Why save the world, when you can rule it?
DJs are musicians. Some of them are AMAZING. Don't believe me? Check out some music these DJs made themselves:

DJ Energy: Arya
BK: Ride The Groove (Turmoil Remix)
Stretch And Vern: That Sound (BK & Nick Sentience Remix)
Solarstone: 7 Cities
Lisa Lashes: Instantly
Voodoo & Serano: Blood is Pumping
DJ Tiesto: Sparkles

I don't think so. Do they actually want to be classified as musicians?

I would say that (the good ones anyway) are indeed very creative individuals.
