Do you believe in hell?

What’s so hard about believing in hell? I’ll tell you. Since limbo was eliminated the only choices are heaven and hell. In general, to go to heaven the Catholics believe it requires Faith and Good Works and Protestant believe Faith alone in Jesus Christ is required. It’s also believed a person must be baptized to go to heaven. In other words even the two major branches of Christianity can’t agree how to stay out of hell. If you choose the wrong variety of Christianity or never hear of Jesus Christ (most of the people who ever lived) you go to hell. God does act in mysterious ways but this is ridiculous.

To paraphrase George Carlin - God sends you to Hell’s fire and smoke and you will burn, scream, cry, and suffer unbearable pain and agony, forever and ever until the end of time because He loves you. Yeah right!

It's from the John Lennon song "God"...however the lyrics are a bit altered that last line should go "I just believe in me." Obviously being sang from Johns POV. I think that is a great song.

I'm not arguing for or against religion or even a hell here, but I have heard that line before and the philosophy behind it is faulty in my opinion. In a view of most religions any flaws people have are a consequence of being given free will. That statement has always sounded like a bad attempt to divert blame...unless the people that say it are tying to say free will is also a mistake, which would be surprising ironic since the majority of those people would probably also think life meaningless without it.

The philosophy behind God being omniscient (which most theists would hold to be true), and God giving free will is flawed, because it is only an illusion of free will, if God knows what is going to happen.

Yea, that sounds about right. There in lies the irony in religion. It was invented to basically scare people into being good humans and yet it makes us turn on each other simply for different beliefs, neither of which can be proved nor disproved for that matter. Yet since the start of religion man has killed man in the name of "God". It's really quite pathetic if you ask me!

Not really because your assuming that even if he does know the future, that the future can't change because of people's actions they choose themselves. Also with all arguments like this people try to place human logic into something, that is by the vary nature of what God is thought to be, is beyond that concept. It's the same as when people that try to disprove the existence of God by using the thought experiment that if God can do anything can he do something even he wouldn't be able to do, or some other similar thing.
