The hysteria over this is just three shades of retarded. Calm down, folks. The people who are panicking are the ones making things even worse.
 
Whoa.. My boss called me late Friday afternoon, and told me to work from home all next week.. I just hit the grocery store to pick up some food I was running low on. While there: No hamburger - except for premade patties at $8.00 a pound, or deli-case ground sirloin for $7.20 a pound. Absolutely no toilet tissue. I think I saw around a dozen boxes of store-brand lasagna noodles, otherwise no pasta. I saw two loaves of light, seeded rye bread (I grabbed the one that wasn't squished at the end) - otherwise no bread. Outside of organic, natural peanut butter - no creamy PB (I got the last, small plastic jar of the store-brand.) No non high-end macaroni and cheese (except for the one white cheddar store-brand box I grabbed).

I visited three pharmacies (2 CVS, 1 Walgreens), and a ****** Dollar store, and none of the other four had toilet tissue either. I grabbed a couple of plastic containers of baby wipes at one of the pharmacies.
 
I tried to go shopping today just as part of a routine shopping trip for food and such. I was expecting it to be a mad house in there. It wasn't quite as bad as I thought it might be or it could have been, but also it could have been better. It was the first time in my life I was totally unable to buy hand soap. I had to settle for some of the dish soap among the stuff that was left and have to use that instead when I run out of the normal stuff. A few weeks ago I stocked up on some toilet paper and paper towels that I do every so often, and it was a good thing I did. If you were the type of person to only buy a small package of toilet paper every so often and right now just happened to be the time you needed some more you would be totally screwed right now. No place that I know about anywhere close by has it right now. I don't know what you would do.

To be fair to most people around here while they might have wanted to get a little extra for themselves probably on the whole weren't totally stupid, but a smaller amount of people decided to be idiots and go way overboard before the stores were sensible enough to limit the quantities people could buy to reasonable numbers. So if you are where I'm at and just need a little bit of it to wipe your ass... The thing is, there might be some stuff that just can't keep up with demand in the world, but at least in developed nations supplying toilet paper isn't one of them. Baring things getting so bad that factory workers aren't allowed to make the stuff for a very long time, or a quarantine gets so bad people aren't allowed to leave their houses to shop for any reason it's not going to be a bad enough problem for some people to have to buy literally hundreds of rolls of the stuff. There is a difference between being reasonably cautious about a real and legitimately worrisome situation and thinking you need to prepare like a zombie apocalypse is coming. So congratulations to the idiots out there who ruined some guy or **** day where all they wanted to do was take a dumb after work or school when they got home and have a problem now.

Everything else was pretty reasonably available. There was no shortage of things like rice, bread, oatmeal, beans, water, or canned fruits and vegetables. Ehh, lets be honest. Where I live that might be more because peoples ideas of proper emergency food to get you through a potential weeks long emergency is a bunch of chips, pretzels, and Mountain Dew instead of stuff an actual reasonable person would pick up.

I didn't get more than what I normally get going shopping. For one I didn't want to add to the problem of dumb panicky people. For two, I already have a supply of emergency food on hand to last a few months if I need it. I didn't get it because of some worldwide pandemic. I've already had it and have keep enough of things like that on hand all my adult life, just like my *** did when I was a *** even before then, just for situations like this where you don't have to get scatterbrained if some unexpected situation goes down.
 
I live over by UCLA and the huge Ralph’s Market in Westwood Village was packed a little after 3PM on a Friday. There were some empty spots on the shelves and the lines at the checkstands were very long. I was there just to pick up some coffee and sushi so I was fine. The people shopping and working were all very calm and well behaved.

Before that I went to Centinela Pet Supplies and ended up getting 2 big bags of dry food along with some extra canned food all for my 2 kitties.
 
Went to Costco today around 6pm. I was surprised there weren't any super long lines then I found out why when I came in. ALL the water, soap and all the necessities were completely gone. There were still a lot of people shopping around but I have never seen so many shelves completely wiped out. Food 4 Less was completely packed as well and I didn't even bother. I just left after seeing the mayhem of cars searching for parking. I'm not a morning person but I'm guessing the best way to get what you need is in the morning. Then again all stores are probably completely out of stock so it wouldn't really matter. I guess I'll just search online and buy a bottle of water for 50 bucks. Yep.
 
I think, generally.. that its still kind of an explosive, depressing situation. They arent exactly SCARED, it seems. Not of the whole death or 'just a virus so bad that you'll never feel 100% again' things, no..

But in a widespread, will-I-really-miss-work-for-weeks, will society still function somewhat normally.. nothing seems right kind of a way, yes.
I, for one.. would very much like to see some of these companies slide out of existence. Create some new monopolies.

I remember at least 10 years ago some doctors warning that we aren't ready to deal with a pandemic and that the government should at least have a plan, but short term profits are always more important than human lives.
Now it will cost multiple times more, and in the end of the pandemic only big pharma and hospitals will benefit with higher profits..maybe that's why they didn't prepare.

I asked an employee if they had toilet paper and eggs in stock, he said to come back in a few hours and the shelves should be full again.

I read that there is about 6 months worth of most foods in warehouses waiting to be shipped to stores.
It's always good to keep a few months of essential foods in case of an emergency, but a lot of people can't afford it.
Parboiled rice, dried beans, and frozen vegetables are three low cost foods that keep for years and most people can survive on for months if need be.

China's numbers haven't changed in over a week. The government is totally censoring the truth.
It wouldn't surprise me if there were millions of people infected in China.
Some rumours are saying that the Chinese government is ******* some people instead of trying to cure them.

In suburban Denver the store we usually frequent was out of TP, eggs, chicken, meat, and produce was emptier than normal. I'm not concerned with the virus so much as the hoarding by my fellow citizens. I was just doing normal shopping. Let's leave some stuff for those who really need it.

This virus might spread more quickly than H1N1 but the mortality rate is far lower. Especially if you're under 55 and in moderately decent health. My 82 year old ****** still plans on helping serve homeless people in downtown Las Vegas tomorrow night despite my protestation. I'm not particularly worried for myself; I'll still do my thing but she'll be exposed to some of the people most susceptible to respiratory diseases and whatnot.

I stopped by the Smart and Final grocery store earlier to pick up a Sunday roast and half their damn shelves were emptied by panicky, stupid crowds. By all means be isolated and don't expose yourself unnecessarily, but common sense would dictate you leave some soap behind for others because if you're self-quarantining yourself, you're not going to be shaking hands with the neighbor who was unable to purchase the items you've stupidly hoarded.
