Converting Video Formats

Re: WMV previewers

don't know about wtf?wtf?wtf?wtf?wtf?, haven't used that in years. about edonkey, check this link: Premium Link Upgrade
i'm not sure whether it works with wmv's though, but it should work with avi's, mpeg's and archives.

Re: WMV previewers

cheers but i would like more info just in case! :)

Re: WMV previewers

Microsoft is very touchy when it comes to their code or even little parts of it, which means that all those non-NS programs that play wmv's can only do that thanks to reverse engineering. That's the reason why you probably won't find anything that really works.
When it comes to wmv's you must also keep in mind that there are 2 different formats with that name. The old one and wmv2.0 (also ending in .wmv and also created by Microsoft).
Now, for edonkey there is a preview plugin for a player called VLC (VideoLanClient)
You can get the program here:

The plugin should also be somewhere on that site.
However this will only be able to play the old version of wmv'. With the new ones... good luck, I don't think there is any reliable software yet.

Cheers ÆGEAN, just checked out the latest version of TMPGEnc - it's slightly different to the guide (but not much).

Anyway, works a treat - I've got other software, but thought I'd give it a go. Best thing is it's FREE.

If anyone wants to skip the guide, and just download it (might as well, as the new version's got built in wizards), here's the link:

:)

:wave2: Here's another video converter, this time for Real Player - it's small and it's free. Not the most user friendly, but does the job.

Note: Will probably work best on older Real files (8 & below). Does convert some newer files, but not all.

And here's the link to the more user friendly front end - it's on the tinra page as well, but in case anyone misses it:

Just remember to virus check before running - I've not had a problem, but some forums reported that some tinra .exe's were infected. This was a while ago though, so should be fine now - thought I'd best stick a warning in though. :)

And a few more links - wasn't quick enough to get it into the last post (sorry).

Not so much video conversion, although they're useful tools to have. If you look on this page (about a third of the way down in quick links), you'll find a whole load of codec's - in simple terms, video compressors that might be useful.

Best 2 for my money are Real Alternative & Quick Time Alternative. Means you can play Real (rm, ram etc. ) & Quicktime (.mov) files WITHOUT needing Realplayer or Quicktime installed.
I dislike Realplayer simply for the amount of bundled adware etc., so the facility to play the files without it is great.

Find out more on Real Alternative here:

And finally (way off subject) - if you're bored with Windows Media Player, give BS Player a go - offers pan & scan/zoom etc., which makes it ideal for playing back converted files.
There's a pro version (pay) or a free version at the bottom of the downloads page:

Here's another convertor that's worked on everything I've thrown at it:

Premium Link Upgrade

Isn't free (although the player is), gotta pay for it. It does have a 30 day trial on it though, so worth checking out if you've got some clips that won't convert. Also comes with a built in splitter/joiner.

Only bad thing (in my opinion) is the interface. It's not as straightforward as other convertors at first, so you'll have to play around with it a bit.
Once you've got the hang of it, it works brilliantly - even converts Real files with sound (not all do).

But if you're just after a .wmv convertor, stick with TMPENG - it's free and works.

but i still can't view my partial wmv file! is there a previewer for e donkey of it THAT WORKS!!!

No and there never will be. Sorry, AEGAN but the .wmv file format is from M$ and they don't even share information about the ports. Edonkey isn't from M$ (duh!) thus they don't have any interest in creating a previewer.
Once a (pirate) previewer should come out, Gates & Co. will be quick in creating wmv3 (it's 2.0 right now) and convince everybody to use that new format, I'm sure.
Just stop downloading that crappy file format all over. In the end it's only helping Microsoft to keep their monopoly and you don't get anything good from it.

but what happens if the vid i want is ONLY in wmv? :( :o
