Not so much video conversion, although they're useful tools to have. If you look on this page (about a third of the way down in quick links), you'll find a whole load of codec's - in simple terms, video compressors that might be useful.
Best 2 for my money are Real Alternative & Quick Time Alternative. Means you can play Real (rm, ram etc. ) & Quicktime (.mov) files
WITHOUT needing Realplayer or Quicktime installed.
I dislike Realplayer simply for the amount of bundled adware etc., so the facility to play the files without it is great.

And finally (way off subject) - if you're bored with Windows Media Player, give BS Player a go - offers pan & scan/zoom etc., which makes it ideal for playing back converted files.
