O'Brien may find door open at Fox if he bolts NBC

If "Tonight Show" host Conan O'Brien decides to leave NBC over its proposed late-night lineup revamp, he might find a warm welcome waiting for him at Fox.

Fox respects O'Brien's talent and sees him as a good fit, a person at the network said Friday. The person, who lacked authority to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, said Fox was watching to see how the situation played out but that O'Brien remained under contract with NBC.

Faced with poor ratings for both "The Jay Leno Show" and O'Brien's show, the network is said to be considering returning Leno to his 11:35 p.m. EST slot and moving "Tonight" to midnight.

Representatives for O'Brien did not immediately respond to requests for comment about his plans.

ABC, for its part, indicated a lack of interest if O'Brien becomes a free agent.

"With all due respect to Conan, we like the late night hand that we are currently playing," the network, home of "Nightline" in the late-night slot, said in a statement Friday.

I like Jimmy Kimmel. Only slot Fox seems to have is 1130 if they really want this to work proper. It would be great if they had it at that time and then lead it right into Jimmy Kimmel.

Or if they were ballsy and put Conan up at 12:30 and put him head to head with Kimmel again.

Either way I watch a late night show couple times a month. Still interesting to see how networks shoot themselves in the foot :hatsoff:

Conan would never be able to live up to FOX classics such as Chevy Chase and Magic Johnson. There's way too much competiton even now with the addition of the smash hit Wanda Sykes late-night show!!!

He should go back to writing for The Simpsons. He was one of the best.

conan doesn't sit really well with the older audiences who are used to carson and leno, he is too hip and new

No, they just really screwed him over by having Leno in front of Conan. All this means is those people who watched Leno can now do so at an earlier time and then go to bed skipping Conan all together because they got their fix so to speak.

They should have gotten rid of Leno for good that way Conan wouldn't have to compete with the guy who hosted the show previously. He was pretty much set up to fail and personally I'd like it if he went to Fox and did a show there. He'd get more freedom in terms of content as Fox is a little more risky then NBC. Bottomline, NBC fucked up and decisions like this pretty much explain why they're in fourth place in terms of the four networks.

Conan beat Letterman for most of the first month he was on The Tonight Show. It took Letterman making a controversial joke about the ******** of Sarah Palin and a controversy over Letterman having sex with interns to turn the tide. Then the Leno bomb went off, and NBC late night hasn't been heard from since.

What will Conan O'Brien do?

Television's late-night drama now shifts to Conan O'Brien's state of mind: Would he be happy to again have the after-midnight spot on NBC or could he find a comfortable home at Fox an hour earlier?

O'Brien's decision is key to whether NBC's fragile compromise plan to mollify angry affiliates and return Jay Leno to his old 11:35 p.m. time slot will work. NBC confirmed it wants Leno to do a half hour show, with O'Brien to follow at 12:05 a.m. EST under the "Tonight" show banner.

Fox, whose executives meet with reporters Monday to talk about the issue, has expressed some interest in O'Brien and could offer him a show that starts at 11 p.m. EST.

O'Brien had waited five years after being promised the "Tonight" show and its time slot after the late local news, moving his ****** and staff from New York to California. That chance lasted half a year. A spokeswoman for O'Brien did not immediately return a request for comment on Monday.

Fox might let Conan be racier and I hope he does leave NBC if they cut his spot already after patiently waiting for years.

I'm all for the move. If it happens.
