China as the next superpower

You, seeing their huge economic growth and their magnificent culture and history, I predict, as many others do, that China will become no.1 in the world in less then 20 years.

It's obvious that the United States is a declining state, due to the lack of population and decreasing economy.

Unless china screws up in something, they'll become the power.

They will be "A" power but have long way to go before they replace the US as the big dog.But for sure they will be a force to be reckoned with.The only thing I might differ with you on really is the population issue.China's huge population is not a plus and they know it.

I agree they are on pace to be #1 in GDP in about 30-35 years. But 2 problems. One is that they are still far too repressive. As the people get more power they will get sick of being so controlled. Will it get resolved peacefully? Two is that there are not nearly enough young women for all of China's young men (thanks to the one child family policy). So China will have to import young women; millions of them. How will this change what has traditionally been a very closed society?
But if they don't fuck it up or let American Neo Cons goad them into a Cold War then they will be #1 (with India #2 in about 50 years).

World's decreasing resources won't allow China to be #1. Currently, there are 510 motorised vehicles (cars, trucks, motocycles,..etc) on earth. If China reaches Europe's living standards (every 2 people have a car), they will demand 650 million motorised vehicles and they tend to consume freaking a lot. Imagine every kind of pollution and the lack of raw materials which can stop the global industry, .
Today, most consumption are made by US and EU. The US has a population of 320 million and Europe (more likely EU) has 400 million so both make 720 million (quite more than half of the Chinese population). If you add Japan to US and EU, it makes 850 million. When China joins superpowers, consumption power will become 2.15 billion. Rest of the world will have to provide raw materials, food,..etc. to those 2.15 billion people. If we had another planet to provide anything from, China as a superpower is ok. But we only have earth and its resources are getting dramatically low.

that's a very compelling analysis. my knee-jerk reaction was "yes of course china is poised for hegemony." i thought the only question would be "when?" and the answer based on how quickly the usa declined.

exactly. thanks for summing up perfectly why some people (myself included) say that China should not and cannot practically attain First World status, and for some reason people have a hard time understanding this.

Maybe they can do this, and I sure see them trying.. but the only thing faster than thier rise will be thier fall.

I see that economic growth brings more energy consumption, again but with actual stats. China and India are in quite fast and strong economing growth. I'm surprised by the consumption rate of US which is too far beyond my expectations.

What do you mean 'cannot'? They already have. Their total GDP is #2 in the World. It's almost bigger then #3 & #4 combined. They're per person GDP is still far below America's. But this thread is about China's superpower status. And China IS a superpower.

If history has taught us anything is that there can never be peace. We are more than 60 years removed from World War II. I predict there to be another war in our lifetime or in our children's lifetime (if we are 20-30 years old give or take).

You don't need stats, figures, or any other data to make this assumption. It is practically a fact of life, that wars happen.

Actually, China's birthrate is in the bottom 1/3 in the World. And it's slightly lower then America's.

I didn't say they weren't a world power now. I said that they don't have a First World living standard. Their GDP is high as far as exports go, and they are rapidly advancing in technology, but thier per capita rates on everything are low. Just like the soviet union which was consired a "rich" country, but it had low or poor standard of living which is defined by access to goods and services.
