John Paul II was known as Joao Paulo II in Portuguese or Giovanni Paolo II in Italian or Jean Paul II in French or Джон Пол II in Russian or Jonas Paulius II in Lithuanian or Johannes Paulus II in Afrikaans. I could go all day with this but this is how he was known in some of the 129 countries he visited. Find something better to harp on me about because that was stupid.

I wasn't picking on you, was i? I used your post as an example to say that translating names is stupid and wrong and i rest my case. Now go shooting birds, Asso Toccatette :p

John Paul, Benedict, Pious or any other Papal names may be difficult to pronounce for people who speak Japanese or Chinese or any other language and so they are translated. And you specifically wrote "WHY DO YOU AMERICANS" immediately after I posted what FRANCIS has already publicly stated about his orthodox stance on hot button issues. So yeah, you were and you have no idea what you're writing about.

Then again, even a "moderate" Catholic in the church structure is pretty much strict and uncompromising from the viewpoint of most of the Western World.

Let's hope that this won't be the case. I do believe in good things to happen sometimes

I talk about Americans and you answer with Japanese and Chinese which are different IDIOMS? You surely know what you are talking about. Bravo! Bad pronunciation doesn't excuse translation; a proper name should not be translated. They teach it in first grade at school. It's rude, it's wrong, there are legal issues attached. You like it or not, that is how it is, smartass. I haven't made the rules. And try to take things easier...i wasn't being polemic at all either against you or against Americans. I was talking about a common American practice, wondering why it is like that and stating that translating people's proper names is nonsense and arbitrary. Come on, now please translate the thing below in bold if the reason for translating a name is its pronunciation: Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama
