Think what you will about this, but the Roman Catholic Church is the largest organisation in the world. This is not a meaningless position. The new Pope appears to be another rather conservative Pope. The highest level of leadership in the Roman Catholic Church appears to want to hold on to the church of thirty years ago. Things need to change. Let's hope this Pope leads the church into the level of change that John Paul II worked for.

Francis? His Pope name is Francesco, not Francis. Why do you Americans always translate names? A name is not a thing. That is why it's written with first letter in capital. It's personal. Spanish, Italians, Germans they don't say Polla Cheney, Cazzo Cheney or Schwanz Cheney for your former vice president Dick.

No, they called him Ricardo in Italian and Spanish and Richard in German. The Pope's name is an affectation upon taking up the title as a way of shedding their personal identities. Why do you assume it's just Americans? The English will call him Francis, and I imagine the Germans will, too. How closed minded and xenophobic of you. It's the local pronunciation and not a slight against anyone.
We Germans call him Franziskus I.
