I love all the "respect the office".... now.
From 2000-2008, when the sitting president was burned in effigy, compared to female genitalia, called names I wouldn't repeat to a ******* sailor, and repeatedly blasted as either a complete buffoon or an insidious mastermind, no one seemed to be 'respecting the office' much.
True enough. And now we've had a sitting member of Congress call the president a liar in a public forum. So we've apparently gone from bad to worse. But I've also seen cartoons depicting Lincoln, Harding and many other Presidents in unfavorable and insulting ways. It's not as if this is a new phenomenon.
How many of you that would go just because it's an invite from the white house would have gone to hang with W upon invite?
Personally, I would go, no matter who the President was, because I respect the office. Even if it was Michele Bachmann, I would go. In her case, I would go mainly because that might be the only hot meal I'd be getting for a long while... what with the worldwide depression that her presidency would probably spark.
But for these sorts of photo ops/PR dog & pony shows, I'd prefer that the President not have a litmus test, where he only invites people who hold his political views. And I'd prefer that the people invited not have a litmus test, where they only accept if it's a President who has views they agree with. But people are free to do whatever they choose. And we're free to make comments about them... and maybe not choose them for public speaking events or sponsorships.
We live in a time where some people feel that they can refuse orders from the Commander-in-Chief because they don't like him. In Hampton's case, he's just an old, broken down football player that few even know who he is. In the case of soldiers who refuse orders, I'd offer a blindfold, a cigarette and a chance to talk to the chaplain one last time.
The way I see it, you're either down with the SPQA cause or you're not. You don't get to bounce back & forth, based on how you feel about the occupant of the White House.
