Hmm. We don't need fashion. We don't need guns. We don't need SUVs. We don't need McMansions. There's a lot of things we don't need. What kind of world would it be if only the NEEDS existed? Oh yeah. It would look a lot like 90,000 years that thing called 'The Jurassic Period'?
Fashion is an art form, much like painting, architecture, higher end cooking. All of these things give our lives more meaning than when we all sat around a campfire in our caves and roasted little beasts.
Nobody needs a $145 white dress shirt, but those usually are made with better cotton and have better construction than a $12 dress shirt at Costco. Therefore, they last longer.
As for Miss California. I don't really give a shit about beauty pageants. They are very crude and demeaning to women. Pageants are nothing more than a public excuse for people to act phony.
I have to believe that all contestants are prepped ahead of time as to what the questions most likely will be --what topics will be covered, etc. I think she answered her question in the way she wanted to and she lost. That's the way it works. The contestant answers, the judges subjectively cast a vote, a winner is declared. It's not too difficult.
I more have issues with her post-pageant behavior. This whole "christian girl" routine she's trying to pawn off to the masses is insulting. I should think it's insulting to Christians for her to talk about underage, nude photos and competing in beauty pageants with a cross around her neck.
