2008 MLB Thread

rodfarva, I'm not sure the Brewers made a mistake at all. going for it by adding C.C. tells the fans they want to win and larger home crowds will mean more money to sign either C.C. or Ben my guess would be C.C. as he has a better health record. and when the Brewers offense wakes up they will pound the ball. Also they gave up 1 young talent to get C.C. and if C.C and Ben Leave they will still have money to make upgrades plus 4 compensation picks in the draft if they pick right they can reload quickly. Also the Brewers have some real talent in AA that could allow them to trade current players for more pitching. I really think the Brewers sense an opportunity to go far and are taking it.

You make some fair points. I'm not going to base the Brewers chances on the six games they've played against the Cubs though. The Cubs, Phillies, Cardinals, and Mets (despite last season) know how to close out a season and make the playoffs, the Brewers have yet to gain that experience. The move wasn't a mistake because it didn't make their team better, it did make them better. It's a mistake because they could very well lose both Sabathia and Sheets in the off-season, so unless they win the World Series THIS year then it's a mistake. And they probably won't win it this year.

OK, I can see what you're saying. I tend to disagree generally with trading for players who are free agents at the end of the year as well. I think the key is this: Sure the Brewers would love to win the World Series this year, but I think for them, even getting to the World Series or even just the playoffs will be significant for this team. They have wallowed in mediocrity for a long time and their fans really need some measure of success. Also, perhaps they are willing to but up the big bucks to try and keep either Sheets or Sabathia. But in any event, a trip to the playoffs and an indication that the ownership is committed to the team could mean a lot to help the Brewers attract free agents and build their club. I say if the commitment is there from the ownership, and they will follow through this offseason no matter what this season may bring, trading for Sabathia is a pretty good start.

Also, I agree with you that the 6 games the two teams have played don't matter too much. I just added that for good measure. :)

Alright, thanks for your opinions. It's one of those things that will have to unfold over time. We'll just have to wait and see whether or not they win the World Series or at least make playoffs and whether or not they bring back CC, Sheets, or both. Only time will tell

Dodgers are at their usual mediocre level. It's frustrating to see the Angels on top, every move they make turns into gold, while the Dodgers seem to be stuck on mediocre year after year. When is this "phenom" Kershaw actually going to turn into a phenom? After about six starts he still doesn't have a win.

trade rumor I first heard about last night:

Roy Halladay from Toronto to either the Cardinals or Dodgers.

Yeah I've been hearing that for a couple of days Halladay to the Cards for Rasmus, two minor league pitchers and a throw in. I honestly don't know if that one will go through simply because the Cards have to this point told everyone that Rasmus is untouchable. So to hear they are so willing to put him in a deal (even if it is for Halladay) is a bit surprising to me. The Dodgers on the otherhand I could see, although I'm not sure outside of LaRoche who they could throw in that would really interest the Jays.

if i where the jays the only way i'd trade halladay to anyone is i get at least one current young major leaguer and that teams top 3 prospects.why give up a pitcher who is an ace for anything less than that. i think the cards shouldn't trade their best young player when carpernter and wainwright should both be back in august and with the current rooster they are within 4 games of the cubs. kershaw is learing the hard way that if you miss your spots major leaguers will punish the pitch i wouldn't give up on him just yet

The Dodgers have a lot of prospects that would generate interest from a lot of teams around the league. Recently they have been reluctant to trade their young players, but I think they should make a move this year. The division is terrible and they have a good shot of making it to the playoffs. If only they could win a damn series!

Roy Halladay would be a good move. I'd rather take Albert Pujols, but we all know that ain't gonna happen. :D

Well I'm happy. The Mets are all alone in first place for the moment. Their destiny is fully within their own hands. Plus, Becks' Brewers are only a game out of first behind the Cubs.

If anyone knows of a relief pitcher who can hold a lead in the 8th inning who might be available, please let Tony LaRussa know ASAP.

I dont think Cards are going to trade away their top prospect for Halladay when they werent willing to do it for Sabathia (allthough CC is a FA at the end of the year-not sure about Halladay)

I would like to see the Dodgers go after a good starter (Burnett, Halladay) but almost any trade they make for a good starting pitcher is going to want Matt Kemp in return. He is one of our most productive guys, so that would a huge blow to our offense if we did that.

Kershaw is going to a great pitcher for many years to come. Remember he is only 20 years old. So he is going to struggle.

I have read recently that the Phillies are intrested in Kemp, not sure who they would be trading for him though.

I would be extremely dissapointed if in the fact the Dodgers trade Kemp even for Matt Holliday. I think many other fans would feel the same.

Its going to be intresting to see what the Dodgers do with in the next 7 days, hopefullly we can improve the team without giving up to much.

I don't see the Cardinals dealing anyone for a starter. Their problem is the bullpen. If and when Carpenter comes back is better than anyone available as a starter anyway. Add Wainwright to the mix and you've got a solid rotation as it is along with Lohse, Looper and Wellemeyer/Pineiro. WE NEED A RELIABLE RELIEVER.

Well there are a couple decent pitchers from the pirates but rumor has it they are asking for way to much on all the guys on the trading block.

They need to get rid of their shitty pitchers, who they signed for trillions of dollars. (Washburn, Silva, Bautista (I do feel kind bad for the guy even though he is make like 9 million or something bucks this year) oh yeah almost forgot about Bedard.

The need to trade Beltre to the twins and ibanez to the phillies or someone else for some young players.

Im a fan of Seatle (after the Dodgers) but this year has just been a disaster.

Halladay may be worth it, but the question is for how long.

If I'm the Dodgers I stay away from Burnett. Yeah, he throws hard but he is a fly ball pitcher, which explains why his number of HR's surrendered are as high as they are. But when you're supposed to be a strikeout guy, and guys are hitting .261 off of you, something isn't adding up.

Plus the Dodgers don't have a great history with clients of Scott Boras (see Andruw-I'm-down-0-2-in-almost-every-AB-Jones). :1orglaugh

i hope every team stays away from Burnett he is a head case thinks he is better than he is great arm but bad things snowball against him. i hear the yanks are looking into washburn. if the cardinals acquired halladay the could move one of there starters to the bullpen i believe he is signed for 2 or 3 more years. yeah everybody is saying the pirates are asking for the moon for their players but that's what happens when you have a shitty minor leaguers
