As a Cardinals fan I'm especially happy about it. We haven't had much to be happy about this year. Although we are only 5.5 games out of first place in the pathetic NL central. It's 2006 all over again. :1orglaugh

As much as I love my Yankees, and as much as I despise the damn Red Sox. I just don't think we can do it this year, now hopefully I'm wrong. But I'm feeling good about the wild card. Hell with the season theyve had I'mm be thrilled with the card. But I'll be a man about it and give the Sox credit where credit is due, if they do win the division, then they do deserve it. As much as it pains me to say that.

Perhaps if Larussa hadn't started a 21 year old rookie in game one of the playoffs, things might have been different. Oh, and I clearly didn't say the headline wasn't correct (technicallly), I said it was harsh. Instead of pointing out how astonishing this comeback was and taking a more positive spin on it, they chose a negative headline. To me, this has to be the feel-good baseball story of the year.

feel good story? yep. but he did fail. larussa is not to blame. he went with the best available, and the best available choked. he then lost his mind and couldnt throw another strike. that is failure at its worst. but, yes it is a great story. i do hope he makes it, but he wont. :2 cents:
I remember it. You don't often see a meltdown like that. It's really sad because his piching stuff was electric when he could get it going. I remember for much of the year in the minors his ERA was near 1.00. The only thing I think you could compare it to is what happened to Steve Blass or maybe Mark Wohlers to some extent.
I wasn't blaming larussa completely. But I do think putting the pressure of starting Game 1 of the playoffs on a 21-year old helped contribute to the meltdown. And I also think that they left him in that game way too long. I think Larussa does hold a lot of guilt over what happened. Did you see him react to Ankiel's homer? I've never seen him react that much, over anything ever (you could say he was drunk with enthusiasm ). Not even the World Series win.
As far as making it? I don't think he'll be an all-star, but he'll definitley be a solid #3 or 4 OF for some MLB team somewhere, for many more years to come. He was leading the minor leagues in HR and he's still only 28. :2 cents:

And so begins the Red Sox August choke fest. Disregard my last post about me thinkin the Yankees still wouldnt catch them for the division.
If Gange gets in shape and Ortiz takes time to get over his injury instead of staying in the line-up uselessly, they may be able to hold off the Yankees.
