XP Pro - anyone know about msi install errors?

Here's the problem..
I decided to upgrade my graphic card, from an ATI Sapphire to an Nvidia FX.
My first attempt was to uninstall the software/drivers for the ATI card then install the software/drivers for the Nvidia.
All went well, or so it seemed.
I started getting the occasional blue screen (obviously there was a conflict somewhere),so I decided the only proper way around this, was to reinstall XP afresh, which I did..
so far, so good.

The new graphic card has settled in, with no blue screens and all looks rosy...except!

Some programs will not install correctly.

My bluetooth dongle won't install, neither will my 'Far cry' game (previously both worked fine).

The problem seems to be with the way the install packages are working..or not working.

The install goes through the initial 'Checking operating system' , 'configuring installer' etc.. then stops and gives me the following error:

0x80040706
object reference not set
Setup will now terminate.

I have googled the error message and have found most of the 'solutions' to be over my head completely.(along the lines of VB programming etc)

I don't think this is directly connected to the new graphic card, more like something not installing properly during the fresh install.

I have reinstalled the .Net Framework v2 (this was one such solution), but to no avail.
I have also reinstalled the appropriate v9 installer package.. again to no avail.

It's not a major problem, I can live without the bluetooth and playing Far-Cry.. but it just pisses me off that all is not well and I can't figure a solution.

:helpme:

(PS If you can help, keep your answers simple... ie can be understood by an eight year old.. otherwise I'm fucked)
