Windows 10 is spying on almost everything you do

I have a spare PC with windows 7, so I decided to upgrade it to windows 10.
I downloaded a copy of Windows 10 with the Upgrade Tool from the Microsoft website, and burned the image to a DVD.
The upgrade went smoothly and windows 10 runs well, is faster, and more user friendly than windows 8.
I went to the Settings to have a look around and ended up spending about an hour disabling settings that would violate my privacy.
Almost everything was enabled to share my info and activity.
One that concerned me was that my PC would be used as a server to upload Microsoft apps and whatnot to other people on the internet who were downloading them from Microsoft.
I checked the settings twice to make sure I didn't miss anything.
I also disabled the "Server" service, to disable all sharing.

This is one of the main reasons why I am choosing to wait before I switch over to Windows 10. Thank you for the link on how to opt out.

Please let us know what you think of the new OS as you become familiar to it.

Privacy... oh how I miss it.

I would also check out your smartphone and tablet permissions. Want to talk about spying? Those ones are even worse.

For the EMPEROR!!
I recently lost a phone so I purchased a cheap Windows phone as a stopgap measure type of thing. It came with the Cortana app and although I've yet to utilise or work it out fully, it probably does the same thing as all those other smart apps/Google do in the regards of "spying".

Truth be told I only gave it a go because I loved Cortana in the Halo games. I'm still waiting for a beautiful blue holographic chick to pop out of my phone. ;)

It's a computer man, everything is "spying" on you
Win10 or not
Yeah pretty much.

Yeah you're not wrong there.

Windows, Android or iOS. Makes no difference. Information is the new currency. Linux is looking more and more attractive as I type......

I'm actually considering giving Linux another try myself. It's a bit daunting with so many versions. Anyone got some recommendations?

If you are new to Linux, the usual recommendation is for Linux Mint, or Ubuntu. Mint will be more comfortable for you if you come from a Windows background. If you come from an OSX background, you may want to look at Elementary OS. I personally have only tried Ubuntu from that list, but the others receive solid reviews. Here is a good site for reviews and general information: http://distrowatch.com/

It also ranks the most popular distros, this can be useful in determining how much support exists for that release. Rule of thumb, the more popular a distro the more support exists.

I started with Ubuntu, and worked my way to Mint. Cleaner and leaner. Highly recommended.

My OS of choice for the last four years is Arch Linux. Great system, but I don't recommend it unless you are comfortable being a system administrator, and doing most things from command line. If you are it is one of the most simple/versatile systems you will ever have.

I'll give Ubuntu another try and then check out Mint I think. I have a system I bought used with a bad copy of Windows 7 on it. Would be nice to try something new and see how I like it.

You can use Virtualbox to safely try Linux or any OS like WinXP, Win8, Win10, OSX, etc., without having to delete you current OS.

Or you can burn most Linux distros to DVD or USB and boot with the Live-CD mode and try it without having to install it or delete your current OS.

Mint is a customized version of Ubuntu, I tried both and prefer Mint.

Linux Lite 2.4 looking interesting, I'll have to give it a try.

Windows 10 still has a lot of bugs so it's better not to upgrade your current OS, and wait at least until January 2016 to upgrade.
