July 29th is the last day you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free, and only if you have a genuine version of Windows 7, 8, or 8.1
If your current windows is not genuine, you can still upgrade to Windows 10, but you will need to eventually pay for it or windows will stop working, or you can find a hack to make it work.
Microsoft should have made Windows 10 completely free for everyone.
Instead of 350 million devices with Windows 10, there would have been more than double.
And piracy of windows would be mostly eliminated.
I upgraded one of my Windows 7 PC's to Windows 10, but it messed up windows, so I had to reformat and re-install windows 10 from scratch.
I've heard a few people had the same problem, and read online that a lot of people had this problem too.

You can use Virtualbox to install a virtual copy of Windows 10, without affecting your current windows.

I have 10 on a computer I recently got. Let's put it this way... I hate it.

Microsoft saw fit to download and install Windows 10 while I was asleep but never prompted for my permission.

That's one way of doing it I guess. It's clunkier than Windows 7.

The first Windows machine I bought new came with Windows 98SE, a great operating system, Blue Screen of Death and all. Subsequent Windows releases provided for consistently inferior computing experience. I currently run Windows Vista on an AMD machine I bought in 2008, I'm long overdue both a hardware and software update, but I keep waiting for Microsoft to release at least a half-assed decent replacement. I really don't want Windows 10, I've experienced the transition shock on machines I don't use at home and really would like to avoid putting one in my domicile, but I know that sometime in the near future I'm going to have to bite the bullet. I hate setting up a new home system and I hate moving files and I hate discovering key missing components (like Movie Maker). How long will it be before they release the latest greatest replacement for Windows 10? It will probably just suck worse.

I've found win 10 to be alright, the main issue was making something other than Edge the default browser on everything because that thing is clearly no where near finished.

TBH I think startup times improved quite a lot after updating.

The main issues most people have are that Windows 10 installs itself automatically without asking for consent, and a lot of upgrades corrupt windows and forces us to backup our data, reformat the hard drive and re-install windows 10 (or previous version) from scratch, which was my experience and many others too.

Here are some apps to disable windows 10 from upgrading.

If Microsoft wants everyone to upgrade to Windows 10, the Home version should be completely free for personal use. They will make plenty of money with licensing to businesses.

I'm fine with Windows 10. Properly installed and configured on decent hardware, it's pretty great. It's definitely the OS that Windows 8 could have and should have been.

The main issue people had with windows 8 was the missing Start menu.
Windows 10 has a Start menu, but it's still crap and not as good as the Windows 7 Start menu.

There are a few 3rd party Windows 7 Start menu apps we can download for Windows 8 or 10.

I use this one on my Windows 10 PC.

Iobit makes very good apps, I use most of their "free ones".

The more I see and hear of Windows 10, the happier I am that I have a Mac. I do run Windows XP SP3 on the other side of my Mac (using Parallels). But it's isolated from the internet and can't send or receive things that shouldn't be sent or received. I might upgrade that to Windows 7 (what we use at work) one of these days. But with all of the intrusive features inherent in Windows 10 (constantly sending and receiving data back to Big Brother HQ), I'd get a bootleg version of Windows XP or 7 before I'd ever run Windows 10. I'm not in to having all of the latest gizmos, bells and whistles (that don't really do anything meaningful anyway). For the Windows based programs that I have to run, XP continues to fit the bill in my case. And the way that Microsoft tricked people into downloading this new OS doesn't impress me one bit.

If they force 10 on me I'll try out Linux instead

That's something I'd like to do. Hopefully, as these operating systems keep getting worse, there will be more Linux supported programs. That's really what the magic formula is. I really find 8 and 10 to be super obnoxious. To each their own, but I just don't like them.

I have 10 on my laptop but I did something and it can't install on my desktop. Darn.

I also highly doubt that they'll make people pay for it in the future. I think there will be a lot of "get windows 10 free!" promotions in the future.

Windows 10 Sends Your Data 5500 Times Every Day Even After Tweaking Privacy Settings

Myth: By disabling all privacy compromising and telemetry features on Windows 10 will stop Microsoft to track your activities.

Fact: Even after all telemetry features disabled, Windows 10 is phoning home more than you could ever think of.

Ever since the launch of Microsoft's newest operating system, Windows 10 is believed to be spying on its users. I wrote a number of articles to raise concern about Windows 10 privacy issues, including its controversial data mining features and privacy invasion features.

The only solution believed to cope up with these issues is to disable all the telemetry features or use an automated tool to disable all privacy-infringing features in just one click.

But unfortunately, all these efforts got wasted because Microsoft still tracks you, even after you tighten your Windows 10 privacy to an extreme level, claims the recent analysis conducted by a Voat user CheesusCrust.

Traffic Analysis Reveals Extent of Windows 10 Spying

Curious to know the extent of Windows 10 spying, CheesusCrust set up his Linux laptop with a Windows 10 Enterprise virtual machine as well as a DD-WRT router that was being utilized to monitor traffic.

CheesusCrust also disabled every single tracking and telemetry features in the operating system. He then left the machine running Windows 10 overnight in an effort to monitor the connections the OS is attempting to make.

The results are not so surprising:

Eight hours later, he found that the idle Windows 10 box had tried over 5,500 connections to 93 different IP addresses, out of which almost 4,000 were made to 51 different IP addresses belonging to Microsoft.

After leaving the machine for 30 hours, Windows 10 expanded that connection to 113 non-private IP addresses, potentially allowing hackers to intercept this data.
DisableWinTracking
Taking his test to a step further, CheesusCrust again installed Windows 10 Enterprise virtual machine on his laptop, disabled all tracking features and enabled a third-party tool known as DisableWinTracking.

After this, the number was reduced to 2758 connections to 30 different IP addresses in the period of 30 hours.

The interesting fact here is: This analysis was conducted on Windows 10 Enterprise Edition that comes with the most granular level of user control, far more than the standard Windows 10 Home Edition used by a sizable audience.

The Greatest Cost to Owning 'Free' Windows 10

However, based on these logs, it would be inaccurate to say that Windows 10 is sending your personal data to Microsoft's servers. But, thousands of connection attempts in the period of 8 hours just to check for updates or adjust the time, sounds more complicated than thought.

A September 2015 blog from Terry Myerson, head of the Windows team, explained that while Windows 10 does send some of your data to the company, everything is encrypted and doesn't include any of your personal details.

Here's what Microsoft says about the Windows 10 Spying concerns:

"We collect a limited amount of information to help us provide a secure and reliable experience. This includes data like an anonymous device ID, device type, and application crash data which Microsoft and our developer partners use to continuously improve application reliability. This doesn't include any of your content or files, and we take several steps to avoid collecting any information that directly identifies you, such as your name, email address or account ID."

While this research doesn't provide what details Windows 10 is sending to the company even after disabling the telemetry features, you have to keep this in mind that Nothing comes for FREE. "Free" is just a relative term. May be you are paying the greatest cost to owning Windows 10.

The NSA has been helping Microsoft with "security" since Windows 2000.
Now we know that they were installing backdoors so the NSA could enter any Windows PC undetected.
So all Windows versions after 2000 have spyware built in by Microsoft and the NSA.
Windows 10 was released 2 years after Snowden blew the whistle on the NSA.
I'm sure the NSA forced Microsoft to add a lot of security holes and spyware into Windows 10 so they could continue to collect as much data as possible.
