He has to be convicted of something before he's sentenced. And I'm fairly certain there was enough reasonable doubt raised that no jury can convict him of 2nd degree or even one of the lesser charges. There's just too many questions about what happened that night to send Zimmerman to jail. Period!

Kind of like being told by Pepe Le Pew that you smell funny. Not really the kind of thing that keeps you up at night, eh?

As for Zimmerman, yeah, I always thought that until the jury reached a verdict, there is no sentencing. And once a verdict is reached, if it's guilty, then there is a sentencing phase 100% of the time. Maybe things are different now, but that's how it used to be. Wonder what changed? Must be this new math that I keep hearing about.
