Why did the Sega Dreamcast fail?

who know why it failed it was pretty decent ... but maybe it was the game discs cause one scratch and the games wont work anymore...

One thing was that the dreamcast didn't have a dvd player. Dvd players were becoming more popular at that time, so more people went with the ps2 when it came out instead of the dreamcast to get a dvd player in addition to the game system.

It failed because it did not have a dvd player like the ps2, when the ps2 was released it was at at price that either matched or was cheaper than a stand alone dvd player.

But in regards to features the dreamcast was a way better system, it was online capable and had a screen with info on it's controller that was really handy for games like nfl and basketball where you didn't want your opponent seeing your moves options or tactics. if sega had waited a little while longer and had it able to play dvd , they would still be around today. :nanner:

The main killer of the Dreamcast was Grand Theft Auto 3. When that game came out, and game footage was released, everyone wanted that game. The DC didn't have it, it had Space Channel 5 (brilliant, obscure, nobody's gonna buy it), Rez (brilliant, obscure, nobody's gonna buy it), Jet Set Radio (brilliant, obscure, nobody's gonna buy it), Shenmue 1 & 2 (brilliant, obscure, nobody's gonna buy 'em) and a lot of shovelware that was basically sharpened-up, smoothed-out PS1 ports.

Before that, and with the exception of Metal Gear Solid 2 and Silent Hill 2, most launch/early PS2 titles resembled hybrid PS1/N64 games, many even worse - even though the PS2 is probably my favourite console of all time, I don't think it ever had games with graphics as sharp and detailed as House Of The Dead 2, Shenmue, Daytona 2001, Ferrari F-355, Zombie Revenge, hell, even Charge N' Blast! Even the 2D games, the Capcom fighters, more animation than the PS1 and 2 (though devs got better over time with PS2 2D fighters).

Dreamcast was way ahead of its time. What's ironic is how GTA3 has dated, and when you gaze in awe at, say, Dreamcast Daytona, how lush and BRILLIANT it looks and moves, you just wonder what the DC could've offered if it had the right marketing and the right developers...

But anyway, like I said, the PS2 is my fave console, but I think the Dreamcast story is very sad indeed. :(

i loved my dreamcast... i don't know why i got rid of it,or why i got rid of my N64 either but i would definitely buy both again from EBAY

I think some people are getting carried away with their affections for the likes of Shenmue. The character design is bad. The guy runs like a robot and never bends his legs when walking or running. It's like he has his legs in leg casts [as if he's broken them]. The facial movement when speaking is not there it's the jaw just going up and down and up and down untill they stop talking. Shenmue IS overrated. Why? because the DC had very little going for it. So what do Sega fans do? they clung to the closest game they could call good quality and hype it beyond it's cotents quality.

The machine was a poor piece of hardware as well. Reboot problems, shoddy control ports that were prone to not working on a regular basis. And it was not the quietest machine around at the time either. Sega only have THEMSELVES TO BLAME for their downfall. It's fucking easy to go and lay the blame at other peoples door when the bitches are not man enough to accept that they fucked up in every situation and didn't have what it took to bring it on.

The Dreamcast's build quality had absolutely nothing to do with it's downfall. Sure, it wasn't the quietest system out there (especially when loading) but it's a reliable system compared to other more successful consoles - The disc-scratching PS2 and self-cooking XBox 360 being prime examples.
And anyway, the Dreamcast sold extremely well when it was launched. Sadly, the PS2 with its ability to play DVDs (and being cheaper than any DVD player around at the time) and backwards compatibility meant that Sega was fighting a losing battle. I'm not a Dreamcast fanboy, but it does have some fantastic games on it (as well as some rubbish ones - But hey, doesn't every system?!!). Shenmue and Shenmue II were groundbreaking games with a great storyline and flexible gameplay. If you think the character design is bad, why not compare it to other games around at that time.

There was a massive problem with the reboot issue from gamers the world over. The build quality DID play a part in it's demise. And you are only fooling yourself if you think otherwise. It was one more nail to the Coffin of Sega. The PS2 wasn't as bad at scratching discs as the DC was for failing with the reboot and control port problems. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising. And this is why it got around as quick that the DC was naff when it came to the resetting it's self [rebooting] and control ports being faulty and it being noisey. The reboot problem was brought on due to poor hardware development [a bit like the 360 and it's RROD].

Legzman

what the fuck you lookin at?
In Terms of success graphics don´t matter that much. PS, PS2, Gameboy, DS and Wii prove(d) it.

Back then it didn't matter much, cause graphics between different games were pretty well equal. Today, graphics are a huge selling point, for me at least. If a game has less than great graphics I won't even waste my time with renting it, much less buying it. That new batman game is a prime example.

sega dreamcast and also sega saturn were both good consoles

but in my country both consoles sold very few pieces and very few games

It supports Windows CE which means no one with a brain actually bought any of their games. And it's total BS people saying it didn't have any games. Grandia 2 & Skies of Arcadia were two great RPGs and the console was a fighter's wet dream with Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Capcom Vs SNK 2, Dead or Alive 2, Guilty Gear X, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, Soul Calibur, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure & Last Blade 2.

I didn't need much besides those to call it a great system, but there were other worthy games as well...Shenmu I & II, Sonic Adventure I & II, Jet Grind Radio, Phantasy Star Online (I'm not into MMOs, myself, but it was certainly a decent one and fairly early for consoles), Bangai-O (a game even Maddox lauded over), Crazy Taxi, MDK2, Power Stone I & II, Tokyo Xtreme Racer II, Virtua Tennis I & II...
