This discussion/comparison reminds me of the latest issue with Motörhead not being inducted into the HoF.

If we talk Singer, this isn't even an issue, Ozzy is a good showman, as you stated, he lends a voice to many great records, but he can't stand on the same stage and not get blown out of the water by Ian.

Ian has that kind of voice other great british vocalists have, like Tom Jones, as an example. Had Tom Jones picked another musical road, he could have led a great rock band, too.

What amazes me about Ozzy is how he can go from barely being able to speak coherently in everyday conversation, but was somehow able to turn it on when it came to singing competently. It makes me wonder if he has a switch on himself he flips somewhere.

Ozzy might be the greatest rock or at least metal person of all time, but I'll admit as far as pure singing talent there were people better than him. Like others have stated he was a great personality and showman. I will say that while not technically perfect Ozzy had that special something that made a lot of his songs sound more real and passionate. Maybe it was the perception he was never trying too hard and could just let it flow, even if he was putting tons of effort into it.

Also, he was just so fortunate to be surrounded by an insane amount of talent most of his career. Most rockers starting out would probably kill be have the people Ozzy has had on stage surrounding him throughout his career. There were times were most normal rockstars' careers would have ended if they were in some of Ozzy's situations in the past. Yet, he always seemed to find more great people to make things work and keep it going.

Deep Purple was good with Rod Evans. Ian Gillan made them better and Ozzy Osbourne was outstanding in the early days with Tony, Geezer and Ed in Black Sabbath and also later with Randy during his solo career.

I can't vote this.

And by the way, you can make an allegiance for Greg Lake, ex-King Crimson, ex-Emerson Lake and Palmer.

But Steve Marriott tops all three. :) There is no comparison. ;) He was the lead vocalist in the Small Faces and also in Humble Pie.

Jimmy Page wanted Steve Marriott originally in the New Yardbirds. Steve turned him down because of Humble Pie. Next Jimmy went to Terry Reid. Terry also turned him down but Terry did recommend a singer in Birmingham, England. That singer recommended a drummer. :) Thus Led Zeppelin was born.

It sure was a different time for music. All the opportunity to do new things. Its really crazy.

I thinks Paul Rodgers from Free probably had the best voice of the hard rock groups of that era.
