So, I was rolling along in the new Battletech PC game, grinding out some missions for gear, money, and xp. As a fan of the series since the 80s and playing way back when tabletop was still a common thing with it and before people just knew the IP through the Mechwarrior video games I would like to think of myself as at least an above average player if not better when it comes to tactics with it. Anyway, I was going through a side mission, and I was equiped for it being nice and careful to slowly work my way through it and minimize the damage I was taking while systematically destroying my opponents, and it was working. After securing an objective a enemy reinforcement lance arrived, which they told me about before hand so that wasn't a surprise. It was heavier than I thought it would be, but nothing I couldn't handle with what I had and the amount of damage I could yet take. To cut the story short one of my two brawler mechs I used for taking, who was undamaged to that point, got one shot in the head on the first turn of that enemies move. It instantly changed the whole complexion of the fight. My second brawler got swarmed and almost went down the next turn, and that was basically that from there on out. While going bankrupt is the only true game ending scenario, the damage that was done to my merc company was enough it might as well have been.
What pisses me off about it is that I resisted save scumming until that point, and had to do it to replay the mission. It was ether that or start over from the beginning.
The game must have a lot of random variance about what forces can come after you even in the same missions. The second time I did the mission the reinforcement lance was medium group of tanks that were very easy to take down. I must have just got the bad end of the stick with RNG with not only what they sent me, but that head shot also, because I still could have probably made it though without significant damage. The whole incident does bring me back to the old board gaming days of it.
