Into the Storm
The part of Winston Churchill in any historical drama is a gift of a role and Brendan Gleeson turns out to be a gift of an actor to play him. He has big shoes to fill - those of Albert Finney, who starred in the 2002 precursor to this, The Gathering Storm. But Gleeson, too, has won an Emmy for the role, and it's not hard to see why. He gives a big, pugnacious performance with a nice blend of wit and grumpiness. The story opens in 1945 as Churchill and Clemmie (Janet McTeer) holiday in France and anxiously await the result of the general election. We then flash back to 1940, as Churchill becomes Prime Minister and blocks Lord Halifax's moves to open negotiations with Hitler via the Italians. ("Nations that go down fighting rise again...") Donald Sumpter is superb as Halifax, while Bill Paterson makes a convincing Clement Attlee. Although the script of this co-production is steeped in a slightly American idea of British pluck, it's impossible not to feel a lump in your throat at key moments, particularly in the early scenes involving Dunkirk, the Blitz and the Battle of Britain, when the nation's back was against the wall. The scene re-creating the "We shall fight on the beaches" speech ought to be corny, with its shots of stoic Brits gathered around radios in factories and pubs, but the emotion of it proves irresistible.
