That's one of the differences - we Europeans are more mature than to go straight to the dick-size issue.

But if you wanna be serious, then history tells you who is the greatest:
For many years, Europe survived and thrived without america. Europe survived and thrived without america when the americans had protectionism.
The americans have never thrived without Europe - look at what happened when they bought in protectionism.

Why did you "save" it? Because if you hadn't, then you'd be facing a Europe united under Hitler if he'd have managed to win (doubtful).
The Russki's had stopped Hitler and would have taken all Europe had america not entered the war.
There is a small possibility that the resources of Empire could've saved Britain. But it's only small.

It was through American assistance that Europe (for the most part) stayed out of the hands of the Fascists and Communists. So I think that they did pretty good considering Europe had been surviving and thriving without them.
