UK General Election Thread!

Is somewhere outhere.
Deserted a smelly dump. Well done Brown.

As if you would know :1orglaugh The air is a cleaner up here - you should
try it sometime ;)

Why is it that all the scottisher type people that I meet here down south say how great it is up in their bonnie homeland, and yet insist on living in England? :dunno:

Because they come down south for better wages, buy their houses, sell
them and then move back up to Scotland into better houses.

I have, it was OK for a short break, rather quaint & amusing, but living there would be intolerable.

Er, they don't actually move back up tae bonnie scotchland.

Brown's been making some impressive speeches over the last couple of days, enough to claw back a few points.

Here's one of them. Haven't seen him like this in many a year - he almost sounds like a bit of a socialist again! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BA2Jz7xIXw

Still voting Lib Dem though - no hope of anything different from the Labservatives, even if they're improving on their delivery.

Not really the best way to go about showing your disgust for Nick Griffin & his mob.

Yeah they should just be ignored but the crap they come out with could drive someone insane if they heard it first hand. Their latest ploy is to tell Sikhs that Muslim men are forcing Sikh girls to convert to Islam (I've heard the odd case of this but it's more about Sikh girls being in relationships with muslim men and having to convert if they want to marry them, Judaism is the same) to further inflame the tentative relationship that already exists between Sikhs and Muslims, and if tensions do flare up they'll use it to criticise multi cultural societies. Their own infighting will be the end of them anyway.

Trouble with voting LibDem is that it increases the chance of another 5 years of Gordon Brown and his likes.

As to mrtrebus, to call the Tories scum after what we've just had is quite remarkable.Brown has destroyed the best pension provision in Europe (we had a pension fund bigger than the rest of the EU put together and he couldn't keep his thieving fingers off) and wrecked the lives of thousands of people who had saved for their retirement. This by the way caused the investment industry to look elsewhere which is why our young people can't afford to buy a house.Mind you, they have anyway been saddled with vast tuition fee debts for useless degrees but of course this made youth unemployment figures look good.We had a Home Secretary who claimed over £100 000 in expenses for living in a single room at her sister's house and who signed legal documents without reading them first.True, they have improved the NHS and some other things but partly through borrowed money and in any case without any checking about whether your money or mine was being used effectively so the improvements were far short of what was spent.Plus hundreds if not thousands of sneaky ways to raise revenue and major erosion of civil liberties. They are devious, corrupt and nasty , above all totally inept and the Tories are as white as the driven snow in comparison.

My only contribution to a thread on the UK Election is that a guy I work with is OBSESSED with the UKIP, to the point that he claims that the US needs a similar party. TBH, from what little I've read they seem to attract some pretty nutty people. Are they batshit crazy, or is that simply libel/slander slapped on them by other parties?

Tories will always be the party for the rich (just look at their funding). You don't even need to listen to what they say as they are unlikely to care much about state education and the NHS as they represent people who go to private schools and have BUPA healthcare. That said I think Labour are far too liberal in terms of penalising criminals and handing out benefits to whoever plays the system (regardless of race or colour etc as i've seen people of all colours/ethnicities abusing the system which takes help away from the people genuinely disabled or unemployed but looking to work), this any party should be tough on whether liberal or conservative. Abandom the Trident system as it's £97 billion (Greenpeace estimate over 30 years) that WE DON'T HAVE, we can't even afford armour and equipment for our troops and the NHS is on the brink of collapse, international affairs need to be dealt with through dialogue.

They'll be getting my vote as well. I just got here, and I already want electoral reform!

This is exactly the problem with the current politics, marquis - you're stuck defining one party simply as the opposite of the other. And with the mentality of your first statement, nothing will ever change. The thing is, you no longer have to do that - there's a third option. I've been telling people left and right to vote LibDem if for no other reason than electoral reform - and to end this tactical voting for 'the lesser of two evils'. Why not pick someone else for a change? They may not have a chance of being properly elected, but they do have a chance of being big enough to push through some key things - like reform.

Just think: everyone's vote counting. Yep, even the whackjobs. But if the BNP can muster up 1 or 2% of the vote, they deserve 1 or 2% of MPs - just as the LibDems deserve just under a third. That sounds like democracy to me.

Electoral reform is essential. A vote near me in Epping, Essex is actually worth 0.033 of a vote. Hardly gonna encourage these people to go out and vote. Lib Dems deal with the issues directly and honestly (they knew the immigration policy would vilify them) whilst Conservatives and Labour are very unspecific and just say what they think the voters want to hear, then they'll backtrack if elected.
