Tim Russert dies

I really liked his on air personality. He was great at forcing his guests to answer the important questions.

American media is not as good for his loss.

Not a big fan but this is pretty shocking. He was only 58.

We are going to loose all are good news people!

R.I.P. Tim Russert:(

That's too bad, he certainly didn't live the average lifespan in years, but he probably had a pretty full life, if that's any consolation.

As for what he did as a career, I think he was better than many, but considering the low place that journalism (esp. TV journalism) is in, that's really not saying a whole lot.

I gotta agree w/ Friday here - I wasn't a fan, either...

I always remember when he would ask a direct question and the other person would try to artfully avoid answering it. It made me even more embarrassed of our politicians.

Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
Shocking. An awesome journalist and interviewer. He will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

WTF ????

Part of my ritual on monday mornings ( 4am ) to watch MTP then go to bed with a " GO BILLS " ringing in my ear.

Sad

Yeah - I was quite sad to hear this - I was watching a lot of MSNBC the past few months, saw a lot of Tim. I thought he was a good guy and a good journalist, within the constraints of major journalism these days - compare him to the insipid types like George Stephanoupolis and Charlie Gibson and he was a godsend.

He knew more than just about anybody how things were going to play out. He was carrying that white board with "Florida Florida Florida" for weeks before the 2000 election and knew that Ohio would be pivotal in '04.

RIP. A good man. Right down the middle. Maybe the most influential journalist in the country. Meet the Press is definitely one of my favorite shows. It will not be the same without him.

Tim Russert: Tough on Liberals and Conservatives:

...Apparently, since his death, the liberal blogs have gone wild criticizing Russert for his tough questioning of fellow liberals.

I will never forget the time he spent his whole program shredding DNC chief Howard Dean. Russert spent almost the entire program exposing various Dean flip-flops. It was so over the top, I felt sorry for Dean. Dean recently joked that he had been “eviscerated” by Russert.

...

Chris Matthews Tops Russert Replacement List

So much for watching that show...

I'll see your  and raise you a :rofl2: for that Newsmax story, where they fondly recall Russert actually holding a copy of their magazine (didn't even know they made paper copies, wow!) and showing it on-air when chatting amiably with McCain. Do you think we'd ever see Russert hold up the left-wing equivalent....say "Z" magazine? - when yucking it up with Michael Moore? Sorta doubtful.

Russert had a mixed record, at best, in how tough he was when it came to his interviews with conservatives.

Don't forget during the Scooter Libby trial, it was revealed that Cheney's media director preferred to get him on Russert's show to talk about the Valerie Plame outing because that was a show where the VP could "control [the] message."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/01/25/AR2007012501951.html

Again, there are/were many worse than Russert, but he was hardly the pinnacle of serious journalism. The Cheney story says plenty, combined with the fact that Bush, a guy notoriously averse to the press, if not antagonistic with them, has heaped praise on Russert and went to his funeral. ("Thanks for never being too rough on me Tim!")

As we agreed earlier FK we were not big fans of him.I always thought he was pretty much a lighweight. But to hear the way they gushed over him all weekend he was the rival of a Cronkite or a Murrrow even.

When Russert took the helm of “Meet the Press” conservatives were angry. Russert had worked for Democrats Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Mario Cuomo. How could a former political aide chair one of the nation’s leading Sunday news programs and remain fair and impartial?

Strangely, Russert’s Democratic credentials gave him license to be a tough questioner. Had a former Republican staffer tried Russert’s act, he would have never made it on the air.
