This Is why Joe Pa is so respected.

What a throwback he is! He'll be sorely missed when he's gone....he's the last of his kind I'm afraid. And I'm not even a Penn State fan!

i wouldnt want to be the kids who did it. the ones that werent involved, have to pay for the mistakes of the ones that were. that cant be good.

Actually that could be a wonderful thing. Sports is one of the very few "environments" in which the social environment has a massive effect on players and its participants, but people can do something about it. Everybody has a strong, if not equal effect on each other. If the actions of a few starts to affect the majority, you know full well the majority will have some say about this and can actually act on it. This works practically well in sports, but no so much in real life unfortunately.

For example, compare the Miami football program with Penn State. Or compare the New England Patriots with the Cincinnati Bengals.

i know. but, when the coaches are not around, i would not want to be the offenders. :D

I like Paterno. He is probably one of the few coaches left in the country with the power and balls to do something like that. Everybody else would care more about recruiting or their big name players’ feelings. It seems he is one of the last coaches that can force a university, or it's fundraisers for that matter, to adapt to what he wants instead of the other way around.

Plain white helmets, black high top cleats,go to class and obey the rules or suffer the consequences. How novel!

Old school program! No flash, no showing opponents up just do your job and move on. It's all part of the package.

I read that article yesterday. I had intended to start a thread praising JoePa for his actions/attitude...glad to see others think as I do! :)

I love my Buckeyes, but after them, I'll be rooting for Penn State!

When I was at Penn State, Joe Pa was talking to my instructor while I was playing racquetball. At the time I was 18 years old, young and cockey. I thought I could beat everybody and I started showing off when I saw Joe Pa behind the glass. Joe Pa stopped me and asked me if I thought I was good enough to play for the Penn State racquetball team. Of course I said yes. He then told me if I could beat Matt, he would put me on the team. I thought I had a spot locked up but then Matt walked in. It was Matt Barr (could've been Chris), former professional footbal kicker. He proceeded to beat me 15 to 1. My lesson from Joe Pa...there is always somebody better no matter how good you are. I was proud of the 1 point I got though.

what do their uniforms have to do with discipline?

A lot more than you think. There is no flash or glitz to the uniforms and everyone is exactly the same. No one is allowed to vary their uniform by having different colored shoes, socks, arm sleeves or unique pads. Most important, no names are printed on the jerseys. The philosophy of all this is that you are a small part of a large team. There are no stand outs, no stars, no individual who is any more important than the other. Every player is equal and every one should consider themselves privileged to be a part of the team.

The uniforms emphasize discipline... not in the form of punishment, but in the form of realizing unity, character, integrity, and execution.

You do have to appreciate Paterno's decision. He is all about "TEAM". My understanding is that even though it was only what "six players" that showed up..........about 20 were called. Same should be done with those stupid ass Duke lax players. So what if the major charges were dropped. Your stupid ass captains threw a drinking stripper party with underage kids. Now You want the NCAA to give you guys an extra year for your own stupidity.
