Actually that could be a wonderful thing. Sports is one of the very few "environments" in which the social environment has a massive effect on players and its participants, but people can do something about it. Everybody has a strong, if not equal effect on each other. If the actions of a few starts to affect the majority, you know full well the majority will have some say about this and can actually act on it. This works practically well in sports, but no so much in real life unfortunately.
For example, compare the Miami football program with Penn State. Or compare the New England Patriots with the Cincinnati Bengals.
