At the rate we're going here, by next year, it will probably be unlawful to say in public, post on the web or print in the press that ''this anti - smoking bullshit is getting out of hand'' and worms like mega etc will always be there to somehow qualify these prohibitions. :crash:

KEEP em smoking, I'm in medical sales and smokers pay my bills :glugglug:

It just sucks when they die to soon because then I dont get my commission.

btw, nobody in my company smokes that I know of. They usually quit really fast after seeing the long term effects first hand

hahaha.. this is the best comment i read! this non smoking law will benefit the people around you. second hand smoke is hazardous.

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
Why not? They are a business not a charity. You need a service that they provide and you cannot provide yourself. That means they get to dictate the conditions in which they offer it to you. You don't like it, cure your own cancer! That's capitalism. Isn't it better than fascism?

Sad, but true.

People forget that all of these huge institutions are nothing more than an extremely lucrative business. Hospitals, doctor offices, dental practices, schools, public transportation...they're all businesses that don't owe you shit. You only get to use their services if their services are paid for. Whether the money comes out of your own wallet or a check that's written by an insurance company, these businesses (in particular, hospitals) don't have to provide you with anything if they don't want to.

The unfortunate reality is that hospitals aren't in it for the reasons of increasing and maintaining public health. They're in it for the money. Everything in a hospital boils down to making money; everything. Their main goal is to make as much money as possible, not save as many lives as possible. If they could make billions of dollars by letting everybody die, they'd let it happen in a heartbeat. But, since their customers are nothing but the injured and sick, and since they won't make money unless their customers are kept alive, they have to find a delicate balance between providing their customers with enough care to keep them healthy (well, healthy enough to pay) and being able to maintain a steady stream of wealthful income.

One of the ways to help increase income is to decrease the amount of money that is spent. Cutting costs is one of the main ways that hospitals improve their profits - laying off employees, decreasing hours and wages, offering bonus incentives to doctors instead of paying out a huge base salary, finding the cheapest supplies, both medical and industrial, etc. All of these are ways of saving money.

By not hiring smokers, a hospital's insurance rates will drop, which will save them money and make room for more profits. Non-smokers cost less to insure, as they are not as at risk as smokers. Insurance rates drop when coverage is provided to non-smokers, so hospitals refusing to hire smokers to work at their respective locations is a great way for them to save money. Since their monthly insurance payments will go down, they're making more of a profit, which is their main goal in the first place.

Face it...hospitals don't give a fuck about you; they care about the money. If they didn't, the first question out of the emergency room's receptionist wouldn't be "DO YOU HAVE INSURANCE?" It would be, "Do you need some help?"

Second hand smoke is the #1 reason why you cant smoke in places, we dont give a fuck about smokers its the waitresses and bartenders that have to deal with it for 6+ hours a day. Thats a hell of a lot of smoke for someone whose just trying to make a living, even worse if they are a smoker.

Imposing restrictions on liberty or persecuting a target group of people is not what fascism is. That is a specific type of government function and while that may be a thing that occurs under fascist rule, it's not the defining criteria. It's more like totalitarianism.

I am fully aware of what fascism is, thank you, and it is not solely a type of government. Perhaps an encyclopedia and a dictionary would do you well.

In California its even worse. Smoking in bars, and pretty much anywhere indoors (save indian casinos) was banned years and years ago. Now, there are actually places outside where it is illegal to smoke.

It is illegal in California to smoke:
-Within 20 feet of any operable doors or windows of pretty much any business.
-In parks.
-At the beach (which I have personally been cited for; $150 fine thank you very much).
-Inside either Petco Park (Padres ballpark) or Qualcomm (Chargers stadium), and I don't mean no smoking in your seat, I mean no smoking anywhere within the entire stadium, both of which, keep in mind, are OUTDOOR establishments.
-A large percentage of college campuses.
-Even an entire city, La Mesa, which is technically a non-smoking city.

Soon enough in California you will find smokers turning off all the lights in the house, locking all the doors, and hiding under the bed to have a smoke. So many rules against smoking, but watch how quickly the state takes the millions of tax dollars generated annually by cigarette sales and misappropriates them... :2 cents:

Portland is at least halfway there by now, and possibly Oregon. I haven't paid much attention to the laws since I quit over a year ago, but it was pretty close to everything you listed in the city by the time I did quit.

While I do hate the smell of a burning cigarette, I think people should be allowed to smoke anywhere they want to outdoors. I'm even an advocate of smoking sections indoors.

what the fuck you lookin at?
Shit like this pisses me off. Just another way for the government to protect us from ourselves.

Lost at Birth
im a non-smoker. i used to smoke loads and loads of pot and still do on rare occassion now but i dont smoke cigarettes. but to those on the thread saying its hurting the medical costs for the rest of us, you are very misinformed and should do some research before opening your mouth.

every major study on the expense smokers have on the medical costs has shown they are cheaper than non smokers. bet your shaking your head in disbelief or saying i'm wrong and if you are doing either one of those things then your just pulling thoughts out your ass and not actually researching.

smokers die an average of 7 - 10 years earlier than non-smokers. that last decade of a normal life is huge in terms of healthcare costs. so basically what i'm saying as callous as it sounds....the early death of smokers actually decreases the long term costs of healthcare expenses. this has been shown in both north american and european studies.

the length of survivability of smoking related cancers is very short. hardly a blip on the heathcare costs. yes there are some that survive a little longer but the vast majority die fast.

doctor - i have some good news and i have some bad news
patient - ok whats the good news?
doctor - you have lung cancer from smoking and your last days are gonna suck
patient - fuck me, whats the bad news?
doctor - it wont last very long

obesity adds more to the costs of healthcare. people who have cancers and other hereditary medical conditions that are common in their family add more expenditures on the health care system. alcohol abuse has a higher cost on the health care system (guess what, alcohol does a number on some of your organs). all of these examples on the long term have a huge drain on the healthcare system both in terms of resources and financial. smokers, with their selfish habit, actually show one act of selflessness and thats to die early so that the costs of thier habit in health terms die fast too. some studies have determined that smoking actually benefits the healtcare system in costs by as much as 32 cents a pack. these were done in the late nineties and early 00's so that benefit may have actually inreased now.

as far as smoking 20 feet away from someone else, the carcinogens dissapate within two feet or less. the exhaust from a bus is exponentially worse so perhaps a bus should operate at least 20 feet away from people. the second hand smoke argument is bullshit. OSHA finally removed that as a work hazard after studying it for 12 years trying to prove it as a hazard and never could prove it. unless your sucking the lips of a smoker who is smoking while your're doing it and you do that every time they light up, you're really not going to die of second hand smoke.

to date, not one single person in the USA has died from any diagnosis of bad health due to second hand smoke. not one single case. go ahead, try and prove me wrong. you won't be able to but go ahead and try if you want to. how do i know this? cos thats how i learned. i was trying to prove it did for a term paper, only to find that no study worth its weight in dirt has proven it. thats basically how i learned a lot of this. i was trying to write a paper on how second hand smoke and all the added medical costs throw an unfair burden on us non-smokers. my research betrayed me and made me a liar. why? well cos i thought surely i was right cos it made so much sense even though i had not reasearched any of it yet. i was positive that all findings would only enhance my argument. i was wrong.

at any rate, societys recent arguments against smokers is suspect, not entirely true, zealous and misinformed and just flat out paranoia. lets just quit being pussies about it and stop making up stupid fucking shit that make us look as though we are in the right and are better than non smokers. instead lets tell them the real argument.

here's the real argument against smokers. it's gross, it fucking stinks like ass, kissing a smoker is equivalent to licking an ashtray, your clothes smell, lots of folks are allergic to it and have some reaction, it makes our eyes burn, it stains the walls, cigaratte butts are discarded as if they don't pollute but they are everywhere, its just a fucking bad habit and yes, for you the smoker, it will reduce your longevity. not that i give a shit about your longevity but somewhere, someone probably does.

finally, that sin tax is paying for a whole lotta shit. and the jokes on the smokers cos they die faster and won't be around to enjoy the benefits we are reaping from those astronomical taxes you're paying. anyway, i dont smoke, i dont like smoking but i'm not going to just start making shit up to try and make people think like me. i'm just not built that way.

final note: i'm not endorsing the early death of the smoker. i'm simply stating that research has actually shown the smoker's early death is cheaper on the health care costs. i'm not saying its good or bad. i'm just saying the argument that a smoker puts a burden on the costs of healthcare is not valid.

i could care less, i dont drink alcohol or smoke... cigarettes that is :D but i do love a good joint after work.... but thats another story. :hatsoff:
