The Music Thread

So... I ****** this thread the last time I posted? Let's resurrect.

Lately I've been interested in watching a lot of cover songs and not necessarily by professional bands but hobbyists as well.

"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by George Harrison, ukulele cover by Jake Shimabukuro

I'm not a fan of Harrison or the Beatles... but that cover really has something.

"Schism" by Tool, bass cover by Sideeffectt (hobbyist, that's his youtube username)

"Symphony No. 88 - movement 4, Allegro con spirito" by Joseph Haydn, guitar cover by Paul Gilbert

I've gotten back on a Doors kick the past few weeks. I think I'm wearing out Itunes with it.

I'm currently re-discovering Blast Tyrant by Clutch.

Despite having it since the week it was released in 2004, I've managed to kind'a overlook it all these years.

Man...what I've been missing!!!

It's getting re-released next month with a load of B-sides/acoustic tracks.

I saw him live a few years ago, and I was totally amazed. Like I told a guy that was sitting at my table that night, in my 15+ years of playing classical guitar I never thought I'd feel intimidated by a ukulele player until I watched Jake Shimabukuro live.

Speaking of virtuosity, have you heard Rodrigo y Gabriela? They're amazing to watch live.

The first time I saw them they were opening for some shitty band like Gomez, or something like that. I was talking with one of the lighting guys when we were setting up the show, and when I told him that I play classical he said that their opening act might be something I might like. I thought I'd go see what he was talking about, so I went up and watched.

What I watched simply blew me away. Since they were the opener there were maybe 200 people in the house when they came on, but everyone was equally shocked at what was happening on stage. When they finished their first tune there was no reaction from the crowd for a couple seconds; everyone was too awed to applaud.

Gabriela's rhythm playing is something I've never seen done before. It's not that I've never seen any of the techniques she uses done before, it's just that I've never seen them used simultaneously, or at those tempos.

Anyway, here's a clip from them on Letterman. The video is too slow to catch everything that Gabriela does, but you still get a pretty good idea of what they're like.

...holy fucking... :surprise:

That was magnificent. I too know of some great acoustic guitar players that are pretty damn proficient with that sort of rhythmic playing, but I've never seen a woman play guitar like that (or nearly as fast). Instant favorite. Did Letterman really say "not bad" in the end? Understatement of the millennium..

Oh. I have to link this old video:

That's John Jorgenson quintet playing a jam of Django Reinhardt's Avalon. God damn that's some really good old fashioned fun they're are having playing that! Too bad that the audience drowns out the music by yelling in some parts..

If you're into Gypsy jazz, check out the Premium Link Upgrade . They're one of the groups that have been leading the Gypsy jazz revival of the past decade, or so. They're a great act to see live, their musicianship is off the charts, and they kick ass in general.

I took Gypsy jazz guitar lessons from their frontman, Paul Mehling, once upon a time. He's an excellent guitarist, and has a personality that can liven any situation.

Anyway, without further ado, here's Not So Fast:

Goddam, Goddam ... I said Goddam!

Incredible.

I love the Hot Club .. but Django's original. I have the 1930s recording from Paris. They are jaw-dropping.

Check out Dominic Frasca if you want to see some incredible, frontier, classical/acoustic guitar chops. (the video quality is dogshit, but the playing ....bababoey!)

Well, not especially into it in itself, but I sure can fully appreciate and listen eagerly when I see a certain sort of passion and skill (and fun) in their playing.

This song has been playing in my head almost non-stop for several days:

I'm on an acoustic solo guitar trip now. Have been for a while already.

"Reality" by Antoine Dufour

"Time 2" by Ewan Dobson (linked this to Shifty's "Epic guitar" thread as well, but I think it's good enough to post it here too)

Like I said already.. the guys with Candyrat records are damn good with guitar.

Edit: OH and heheh.. Drum cover for "Time 2". Pretty good.

If you want to listen to some good hip-hop music that isn't **** then I recommend you listen to Chiddy Bang and Atmosphere. Here's some of their stuff.

Atmosphere are from my area. They are local icons. They are always playing the local outdoor summer venues but they have international appeal as well. It's not easy to come out of this area and go real big. Prince is the most legendary. It's still a dope ass music scene - outside of LA, Chi and LA better than most of the country.

I'm pretty much a straight up metalhead, but I got this album for christmas (upon my request) and it's amazing, start to finish:

I have begun listening to classical music, mostly from the 18th century. I have collected all Beethoven's symphonies, except no.3 and no.4. They are more enjoyable than I thought.
Funny thing is when I say I have begun listening to it people become quiet and then quickly changes the subject. :D

Classical is great!

But, just like any genre, there is good and terrible (just because it sounds "classical" doesn't mean it's good!)

LVB's 7th is tops for me.

His 9th was basically arena rock of the day! lol!
Nothing bigger or badder!

Then there are all kinds of 'obscure' (but only so because they aren't one of the superstars) composers.
Try Shostakovich for some craziness.
